A tragic incident unfolded when a 14-year-old girl passed away shortly after secretly undergoing breast augmentation and a buttock lift, procedures performed without her father’s consent. Paloma Nicole Arellano Escobedo underwent the surgeries on Saturday, September 20, at a medical facility in Durango, Mexico. She subsequently fell into a coma, suffering from brain swelling and cardiac complications linked to the clandestine operations, as reported by local news outlet El Siglo de Durango. Authorities have launched an investigation into her mother’s plastic surgeon boyfriend, who is now facing allegations of possible negligent homicide.
Paloma’s father, Carlos Arellano, was initially misinformed that his daughter’s death was due to Covid-19 complications. It was only during the funeral that he discovered she had undergone cosmetic surgery. “At the funeral, some family members noticed her breasts appeared larger than before. When I confronted her mother, she denied any knowledge of the surgery,” Carlos told prosecutors, according to AZ Central.
Determined to uncover the truth, Carlos asked his ex-wife’s family to leave the room so that his mother, sister, and sister-in-law could assist him in examining Paloma’s body. Their suspicions were confirmed: breast implants and surgical scars were evident. “We have photographic evidence of the implants and incisions. We immediately requested an autopsy,” he stated in his formal complaint.
According to Carlos, his ex-wife had consented to the procedures, which were performed by her current partner, a 45-year-old plastic surgeon identified only as Víctor N., who owns the clinic. Carlos accuses both his ex-wife and the surgeon of deceit and covering up the truth, holding them responsible for Paloma’s untimely death.
While Mexican law does not explicitly set age restrictions for cosmetic surgeries, such procedures are generally only authorized for minors under 18 when both parents provide consent. “We are investigating potential negligence by the mother for placing a minor under her care in a hazardous situation,” stated Yadira de la Garza Fragoso, Durango’s Attorney General, as reported by AZ Central.
The surgeon’s medical license has been suspended pending an inquiry into malpractice and possibly more severe charges, depending on the autopsy results, which may take over ten days to complete. “There could be charges of negligent homicide and professional medical liability,” the Attorney General added.
In response to this tragedy, Paloma’s father has initiated a public awareness campaign highlighting the risks associated with cosmetic surgery on minors. A march is scheduled for Friday, September 26, under the banner “Girls Don’t Need Implants,” according to AZ Central.
“We must stop normalizing the premature sexualization of young girls and prevent adults’ ambitions from endangering their lives. We demand justice and accountability for this crime,” Carlos declared on his Instagram. “Girls deserve to grow up safe, respected, and free.”
