Rotimi Amaechi Announces 2027 Presidential Bid Under ADC Banner
Rotimi Amaechi, the former Governor of Rivers State and ex-Minister of Transportation, has officially declared his candidacy for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election. He will run on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform and has made it clear that he will not withdraw in favor of any other contender.
Commitment to a Transparent and Competitive ADC Primary
Following a meeting with a coalition of traders in Kano, Amaechi emphasized the importance of a fair and open primary process within the ADC. Speaking to the BBC Hausa Service, he expressed confidence in his chances, stating, “I am contesting the ADC presidential primary, and with God’s help, I intend to win and challenge Tinubu in 2027.” He added firmly, “I will not step aside for anyone. The decision should be left to the people.”
Championing Internal Party Democracy
Having served as Minister of Transportation from 2015 to 2022, Amaechi views the ADC’s internal contest as a vital demonstration of democratic principles. He acknowledged that all aspirants have an equal right to compete for the party’s nomination, underscoring the party’s commitment to inclusivity and fairness.
Critique of the Current Administration’s Performance
Amaechi did not hold back in his assessment of President Bola Tinubu’s government, highlighting widespread dissatisfaction among Nigerians. “Regardless of whether the government aims to conduct credible elections, the reality is that time has run out. Nigerians are frustrated because no region, including Rivers State or the South, is content under Tinubu’s leadership,” he remarked. He challenged the narrative that the current political climate is a North-South divide, insisting that hardship is felt nationwide.
Concerns Over Governance and Appointments
He also criticized Tinubu’s governance style, particularly the perceived favoritism in political appointments. “Even within the Yoruba community, many feel marginalized. The president appears to reward only a select few close allies, leaving the majority overlooked,” Amaechi asserted.
Position on Zoning and Party Decisions
Regarding the possibility of zoning the ADC presidential ticket, Amaechi deferred to the party’s discretion. “Zoning is a matter for the party to decide. I am a member and will respect whatever decision is made. However, from my perspective, I remain fully committed to the race,” he said.
Amaechi’s Vision for National Unity and Preparedness
Highlighting his qualifications, Amaechi positioned himself as one of the most ready candidates for the presidency. “When you compare all aspirants, including Tinubu, who is better prepared than I am? I hail from the South and maintain peaceful relations across the South-East, South-West, and North. My candidacy embodies unity,” he declared.
Addressing Allegations of Waning Influence in Rivers State
Responding to claims that his political influence in Rivers State has diminished due to the prominence of his rival, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Amaechi dismissed such assertions. “During my recent visit to inaugurate the ADC in Rivers, the turnout was overwhelming from the airport to the event venue, and no funds were spent on mobilization. This clearly reflects the people’s support,” he explained.
As the 2027 elections approach, Amaechi’s firm stance and declaration signal potential tensions within the ADC, setting the stage for a fiercely contested primary.
