ADC Responds to Labour Party’s Datti Baba-Ahmed, Reaffirms Dedication to Opposition Unity for 2027
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has publicly dismissed recent criticisms from Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, the vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, regarding the opposition coalition‘s ability to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Clarifying the Party’s Stance Amidst Internal Critique
In a statement released on Saturday by Jackie Wayas, the ADC’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, the party emphasized that Baba-Ahmed’s remarks represent his individual perspective and do not align with the official position of the ADC or its coalition partners.
During a live broadcast on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Baba-Ahmed accused the opposition alliance of misleading Nigerians and questioned its capacity to effectively address the nation’s developmental challenges. He also reiterated his intention to run alongside former LP presidential candidate Peter Obi in the 2027 elections.
ADC’s Vision for a United Front Against APC Dominance
Contrary to Baba-Ahmed’s skepticism, the ADC reaffirmed its commitment to a cohesive and broad-based opposition coalition aimed at providing Nigerians with a viable alternative to President Bola Tinubu’s administration. The party highlighted that this alliance is supported by influential political figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, former Senate President David Mark, ex-Minister of Interior Rauf Aregbesola, former Minister of Transport Rotimi Amaechi, and Peter Obi himself.
This coalition, the ADC stated, emerged from extensive consultations prioritizing national interest over partisan ambitions, with the goal of delivering competent and empathetic governance. The party also recalled Obi’s previous endorsement of the coalition, underscoring his belief in the necessity of opposition unity to dismantle systemic poverty and insecurity entrenched in Nigeria.
Encouraging Collaboration for Nigeria’s Future
The ADC’s statement further acknowledged Senator Baba-Ahmed as a respected advocate for integrity and justice, expressing hope that he would join the collective effort to strengthen the coalition. “Since this alliance depends on the combined strength and expertise of all patriots, we sincerely invite Senator Baba-Ahmed to contribute to this shared vision for a better Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
Contextual Insight: Opposition Dynamics Ahead of 2027
As Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, the opposition landscape remains fluid, with parties navigating internal disagreements while striving to present a united front against the APC’s entrenched power. Recent polls indicate that public demand for credible alternatives is rising, with over 60% of surveyed Nigerians expressing dissatisfaction with the current administration’s handling of economic and security issues.
In this environment, the ADC’s reaffirmation of coalition solidarity signals a strategic effort to consolidate opposition forces, aiming to harness collective political capital and grassroots support to challenge the ruling party effectively.
