In anticipation of the 2027 general elections, the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Akwa Ibom State has officially endorsed the bids for a second term by President Bola Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Governor Umo Eno.
Dr. Uwemedimo Udo, ALGON chairman and also the head of Uyo Local Government Area, emphasized that this endorsement is crucial to maintaining the momentum of ongoing socio-economic reforms driven by visionary leadership at both federal and state levels.
He further affirmed the association’s commitment to rally voters across all 31 local government areas to ensure the electoral success of these leaders.
This commitment was reiterated during a breakfast event hosted by Governor Eno in Uyo, marking the first anniversary of the current local government chairmen’s tenure. The gathering highlighted the synergy between federal, legislative, and state authorities as a foundation for sustainable progress.
“President Tinubu has implemented courageous and strategic measures to revitalize Nigeria’s economy. Although the removal of the fuel subsidy was a challenging decision, it has substantially increased revenue for local governments, allowing us to invest more in impactful development projects that directly benefit our communities,” Udo remarked.
He explained that the boost in financial resources has enhanced the capacity of local councils to roll out social welfare initiatives, improve infrastructure, and stimulate rural entrepreneurship-key drivers of inclusive growth at the grassroots level.
Expressing confidence in Governor Eno’s leadership, the ALGON chairman noted that the unanimous support from the 31 local government chairmen stems from the governor’s effective governance, people-oriented policies, and inclusive approach.
“We have witnessed tangible progress across various sectors. Your administration has been characterized by inclusivity, a focus on the people, and a commitment to development,” he stated.
“Celebrating our first year in office under His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, provided us with an opportunity to assess the support and collaboration received from the state government. The outcomes have been remarkable, positively influencing our collective performance as council leaders,” Udo added.
He praised the ARISE Agenda for complementing President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), describing both as aligned frameworks that promote economic resilience, empowerment, and broad-based development.
Additionally, the ALGON chairman lauded Senate President Godswill Akpabio for his impactful leadership in the National Assembly, which has delivered significant, people-centered projects to Akwa Ibom State.
“We are eager for his return to the Senate to continue steering the National Assembly beyond 2027. His expertise and influence are critical to Akwa Ibom’s advancement,” Udo emphasized.
In a notable display of cross-party solidarity, Hon. Kufre Umoren, chairman of Onna LGA and the sole opposition council leader, pledged unwavering support for Governor Eno’s re-election campaign.
Governor Eno, in response, praised the local government chairmen for effectively translating the ARISE Agenda into concrete community developments.
“I am proud of every local government area; your efforts have been commendable. Maintain this spirit of collaboration and constructive feedback to ensure development touches every part of our state,” the governor encouraged.
“As local government chairmen, you serve as my representatives on the ground. Mobilize your communities, foster trust, and ensure that the benefits of governance are felt by all,” he added.
APC state chairman Obong Stephen Ntukekpo commended the chairmen for their unity in advancing good governance, while Ambassador Assam Assam (SAN), director-general of the Umo Eno Campaign Organization, urged them to stay loyal and focused on the people’s welfare.
