Three Abia State women have won N6.5 million prizes in a home gardening competition of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) of the wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
The winners of the competition, which began in 2023, and the prizes are, first position, Osuchukwu Ijeoma, N5million; Moses Nwayinma came second and won N1.5million while Ezinne Imo came third and won N500,000.
The state governor’s wife, Pricillia Otti, who presented the prizes to them in Umuahia, the state capital, commended Senator Tinubu for initiating the competition.
She used the forum to urge women to embrace home gardening to combat food insecurity and improve their family nutrition.
Represented by the deputy governor’s wife, Adaeze Emetu, she said the theme of “Every Home a Garden” was timely and could not be overemphasised.
She said the programme was designed to empower families to take ownership of their food security by cultivating gardens within their homes, encouraging wholesome eating and achieving self-sufficiency.
In an address, the commissioner for Agriculture, Cliff Agbaeze, stressed the need for households to adopt climate-smart agricultural practices for increased food production.
Represented by the ministry’s permanent secretary, Ijeoma Aguwa, he advised them to view home gardening not merely as a subsistence activity but as a potential income-generating venture.
Earlier in a speech, the state RHI desk officer, Amarachi Anyim, lauded the founder for her vision of transforming families through empowerment programmes.
She also commended and thanked the state first lady and her office for partnering with the RHI and extending its benefits to the grassroots.
