Unstoppable Force: How Joy Omewa’s 32 Goals in 36 Games Demand Nigeria’s Attention

Nigeria’s Legacy of Prolific Goal Scorers Shows No Signs of Fading

Throughout the years, Nigeria has consistently produced forwards who can change the course of a game single-handedly. Legends like Mercy Akide, Perpetua Nkwocha, Desire Oparanozie, and Asisat Oshoala have all carried the Super Falcons’ attacking mantle with distinction. Now, the spotlight is gradually shifting towards a new name: Joy Omewa.

If Joy Omewa’s name hasn’t reached your ears yet, it’s only a matter of time before it does.

At just 22 years old, Omewa has been quietly dismantling defenses in Denmark’s top flight with Fortuna Hjørring, compiling statistics that rival even the most celebrated Nigerian forwards.

Her recent performance was nothing short of spectacular. In a commanding 6-1 victory over Kolding IF in the Danish Women’s League, Omewa netted two goals that showcased her confidence and flair.

The first was a daring panenka penalty in the 62nd minute, executed with poise and audacity. The second was a breathtaking lob from near the halfway line, leaving the goalkeeper helpless and the crowd in awe.

With ten goals across all competitions this season, scoring in five consecutive matches, and a quickfire double within four minutes, Omewa’s lethal finishing is making a compelling argument for her inclusion in the Super Falcons squad.

Impressive Statistics Speak Volumes

Describing Omewa as simply “in form” doesn’t do justice to her current run of excellence.

Last season, she amassed 22 goals and provided four assists in just 24 league appearances, playing a pivotal role in Fortuna Hjørring’s capture of both the Danish league title and the national cup.

In the current campaign, she has already scored seven goals and assisted once in eight league matches, alongside three goals in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. This totals an astonishing 32 goals in her last 36 competitive outings.

No other Nigerian forward playing in Europe can boast such prolific numbers-not Asisat Oshoala in Saudi Arabia, Gift Monday in the United States, or Esther Okoronkwo in Canada.

At this moment, Omewa stands as the most productive Nigerian striker on the European stage.

Despite these outstanding achievements, Omewa was surprisingly left out of the Super Falcons squad announced by coach Justin Madugu for the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in July.

While Nigeria went on to clinch the title, sparing Madugu from criticism, Omewa’s exclusion sparked debate. Had the outcome been different, the decision would have been much harder to justify.

Perfect Timing for a New Chapter

Football often presents opportunities at the most opportune moments.

Recently, Ifeoma Onumonu, a seasoned forward for Nigeria, announced her retirement from international duty at the age of 31.

Onumonu’s departure leaves a significant gap in Nigeria’s attacking options, one that Omewa appears ideally suited to occupy.

Another promising talent is Edna Imade, a forward owned by Bayern Munich, who many regard as a future star and potential successor to Oshoala.

However, when comparing current form, Omewa’s goal-scoring exploits are unmatched. Her fearless approach and clinical finishing-evidenced by her audacious 40-yard chip-reflect a player brimming with self-assurance.

Looking Beyond Oshoala’s Era

Asisat Oshoala remains Nigeria’s most iconic forward, continuing to find the back of the net with ease in Saudi Arabia.

Now 30, Oshoala’s prime years are gradually behind her, prompting the Super Falcons to prepare for the future beyond their six-time African Women’s Footballer of the Year.

While Imade represents a promising long-term prospect, Omewa appears ready to make an immediate impact.

Her versatility in scoring-from precise penalties and opportunistic tap-ins to spectacular long-range strikes-makes her an exceptionally well-rounded forward for her age.

Formerly with Confluence Queens, Omewa has demonstrated maturity beyond her years-commanding the attack in Champions League fixtures, thriving under pressure, and proving she can shoulder the responsibility of being the main goal threat.

Poised to Shine in Green and White

There has never been a more fitting moment to hand Omewa her chance on the international stage. Her recent brace, coupled with a Champions League goal and a consistent scoring record, underline her readiness.

It’s no longer a question of potential but of proven output. Omewa’s current form is impossible for the Super Falcons to overlook.

With Onumonu’s retirement creating an opening, coach Madugu would be wise to seize the opportunity and integrate Omewa into the squad.

The Super Falcons have a history of entrusting young forwards with significant responsibility. Oshoala herself was fast-tracked into the senior team after the U20 World Cup and never looked back. Omewa deserves a similar leap of faith.

Nigeria’s attacking future is beginning to crystallize. While Imade may be the long-term heir, the immediate need for goals is best met by the in-form Joy Omewa.

There has never been a better time to unleash her talents in the green and white.
