Hi Chocolate Thvnder, how are you doing today?

I’m doing well, thank you! It’s a pleasure to share my story with BellaNaija Weddings.

Could you tell us about your early life-your birth name, where you were raised, and how your background influenced who you are now?

My birth name is Kofoworola Bhadmus. I was raised in Lagos, Nigeria, in a household buzzing with creativity and cultural expression. My father was a designer who crafted caps and traditional outfits for notable figures such as K1 De Ultimate, Florence Ita Giwa, and Folorunsho Alakija. Every weekend, I’d watch his designs showcased on The Charly Boy Show, worn by celebrities like Tunde & Wunmi Obe. Growing up immersed in that artistic environment shaped my appreciation for entertainment-not just as a craft, but as a powerful connector of people and culture.

What was your academic path like? Did you always envision a career in music and entertainment?

I pursued Actuarial Science at the University of Lagos, but my interests naturally gravitated towards public relations and communications. This education helped me understand people, brands, and storytelling deeply. Over time, I gained experience in media, marketing, and artist management. Yet, music was a constant presence in my life. Eventually, I realized that entertainment wasn’t just a hobby-it was my true vocation.

When did you decide to become a DJ, and what motivated you to take that route?

In late 2019, just before the pandemic, I faced a significant personal loss that made me reevaluate my career. I took a break from work in early 2020 and experimented with various creative outlets-drawing, photography, videography, graphic design, even coding. But I kept asking myself what felt authentic and sustainable. That’s when I discovered DJing through YouTube tutorials. I had always enjoyed curating music for friends and small events, and I loved how the right track could transform a room’s energy. It resonated deeply with me. By February 2020, I fully embraced DJing, combining my passion for music, creativity, and human connection. What began as exploration quickly became a calling I couldn’t ignore.

How did you come up with the stage name Chocolate Thvnder, and what significance does it hold for you?

The name Chocolate Thvnder embodies a blend of smoothness and intensity. “Chocolate” conveys richness and an inviting warmth that people are naturally drawn to, while “Thvnder” symbolizes power, energy, and a commanding presence. Together, the name reflects my DJ style-effortlessly smooth yet impactful, always leaving a memorable mark.

Can you share your career highlights, from your first gigs to major milestones like performing at the Big Brother Naija Saturday Night Party?

My initial gigs were intimate affairs-friends’ birthdays, weddings, and house parties. A key break came when Tolanji Baj introduced me to a friend who had just launched a lounge, which led to my first residency lasting about three months after the lockdown. By December 2020, I was DJing at weddings regularly. Each event helped me hone my craft and build confidence. Gradually, I moved on to larger venues, brand collaborations, and after-parties. A standout moment was performing at the Big Brother Naija 10/10 Saturday Night Party. Knowing that millions across Africa were tuning into my set live was surreal and remains one of my proudest achievements.

What are some of the challenges DJs face in Nigeria’s entertainment industry today?

One major hurdle is the tendency for DJs to be undervalued compared to other entertainment roles. There’s a lingering stereotype that DJs lack formal education or don’t deserve respect, which is unfair. Additionally, infrastructural issues like inconsistent access to quality sound equipment, music licensing, and distribution support pose significant obstacles. Despite these challenges, Nigerian DJs are incredibly innovative and determined. We continuously adapt and push boundaries to stay relevant in a fast-evolving industry. This resilience is a defining trait of our community.

What moment in your career stands out as particularly meaningful?

In August 2024, while DJing at a friend’s wedding, a woman approached me for my contact details. It turned out to be Sade Adenuga. She later contacted her event planner, who invited me to be the second DJ at her wedding. Since then, that connection has led to countless referrals. Another unforgettable highlight was my set at the Big Brother Naija Saturday Night Party. These experiences reinforce why I do what I do: crafting unforgettable moments, building connections, and making lasting impressions through music.

Besides DJing, what else occupies your time? If you weren’t a DJ, what career path might you have taken?

Alongside DJing, I work as a Business Development Consultant. I’m also passionate about basketball and have a keen interest in media strategy and brand communication. If I hadn’t become a DJ, I’d likely still be involved in the media and entertainment industry, helping brands forge meaningful connections with their audiences.

Reflecting on your journey, what lessons has DJing taught you about perseverance, creativity, and expressing yourself?

DJing has instilled in me patience and grit. Sometimes the crowd doesn’t respond as expected, and you have to persist until you win them over. It’s also taught me that creativity means constant evolution-finding fresh ways to express yourself and embracing risk. Most importantly, it’s shown me the profound impact of self-expression through music and how sharing your passion can inspire and uplift others.
