Our Story
Narrated by the bride, Deby:
At the age of 11, I traveled from Italy to Nigeria with my parents, expecting a brief visit. However, they surprised us by announcing that we would be staying for at least a year to connect with our heritage. Initially, I was upset and reluctant to start summer school, feeling torn away from my familiar life and friends. Surprisingly, I quickly grew fond of the school and made several friends during the short summer term. My parents were pleased to see me adapting so well. But everything shifted on the first day of the new school year in September when they told me we were moving to a different school. I was heartbroken-not only was I leaving behind my Italian friends and adjusting to a new culture and language, but now I had to say goodbye to the few friends I had just made.
Understandably, I was heartbroken. With no other option, I began attending the new school, which felt dull and unwelcoming. During lunch, I confided in my sister about my struggles. She told me about a hilarious boy in her class named Uche who had introduced himself to her. Soon after, he came over to meet me, and for the first time that day, I found myself smiling.
That evening, I returned home in high spirits and told my parents I loved the new school because I had met my future husband. They chuckled at my youthful enthusiasm. Little did they know, I was right. That day marked the beginning of a lifelong bond. My sister was also correct-Uche’s humor has never ceased to brighten my days.
