Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, the sole administrator of Rivers State, has announced that his leadership has successfully restored stability within the state, laying a vital groundwork for Rivers to emerge as a benchmark of exemplary governance in Nigeria.

This statement was made during a public lecture titled “Democracy and Good Governance,” which brought together academics, policymakers, and community members to evaluate Nigeria’s democratic evolution alongside the recent developments in Rivers State.

Upon assuming office on March 18, 2025, Ibas emphasized that his primary mission was to reestablish peace amid widespread insecurity, political deadlock, and eroded public confidence.

He highlighted that through collaboration with key stakeholders, his administration managed to hold peaceful local government elections, thereby reinstating democratic processes at the grassroots level.

Reflecting on the period of emergency rule, Ibas remarked, “The imposition of emergency governance was not a preference but a necessity. In retrospect, it taught us invaluable lessons – that peace is invaluable, security is the bedrock of all progress, and the resilient spirit of the Rivers people remains unshaken.”

Linking a recent Thanksgiving Service to the lecture, he described the event as “a reaffirmation of our commitment to the people of Rivers State, underscoring that democracy must yield tangible results and governance should always be anchored in service.”

Praising the guest speaker, Prof. Abiodun Amuda-Kannike, for his compelling discourse on “Good Governance and Democratic Dividends,” Ibas encouraged the widespread dissemination of the lecture’s insights.

Expressing deep appreciation for the overwhelming support from Rivers residents, the administrator called on everyone to renew their dedication to tolerance, reconciliation, and shared advancement.

“The peace we have achieved forms the cornerstone for rebuilding democracy,” he asserted. “There is still much work ahead, but the foundation is firmly in place. Together, we can demonstrate to the nation that Rivers State, the country’s resource hub, can also set the standard for effective governance in Nigeria.”

In his opening remarks, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Ibibia Lucky Worika, described the occasion as “a pivotal chapter” in the state’s history, marking the end of six months under emergency rule and the restoration of democratic governance. He stressed the “noble responsibility” of all citizens to uphold institutions that champion justice, equity, and transparency.

During the keynote address, Prof. Abiodun Amuda-Kannike emphasized the necessity of inclusiveness, authentic citizen empowerment beyond financial incentives, and the implementation of sustainable policies. He pointed out the urgent need to prioritize agricultural innovation and security as drivers for economic diversification.

Amuda-Kannike encouraged the people of Rivers State to foster dialogue, mutual respect, and forgiveness as vital components of peacebuilding, affirming that “Rivers State, renowned for its vibrancy and promise, must once again illuminate the path as a model for other Nigerian states.”
