Sheikh Ahmad Olagoke Aladesawe, the esteemed Chief Imam of Owo and the chairman of the Ondo State League of Imams and Alfas, has passed away.

At the age of 91, Aladesawe, who also served as the secretary-general of the League of Imams and Alfas covering Yoruba Land, Edo, and Delta States, died peacefully on Monday evening at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Owo.

Renowned for his dual role as a spiritual leader and a pillar of the community, his demise has deeply saddened Muslims in Owo and neighboring regions.

Kamorudeen Ishola, a close confidant and notable son of Owo, confirmed the news from Akure, the capital of Ondo State. He announced that the Janazah (Islamic funeral rites) will be held in Owo on Tuesday, September 16, at 2:00 p.m.

Before dedicating his life to Islamic scholarship, Aladesawe was a school principal, blending his educational expertise with religious teachings to nurture and inspire countless followers over many decades.

He was celebrated for his modesty, profound insight, and unwavering dedication to fostering peace. Many in Owo viewed him as a paternal figure who championed interfaith harmony and upheld strong ethical principles within society.

His passing signifies the conclusion of a significant chapter in Owo’s history, where he was revered not only as a spiritual guide but also as a guardian of cultural heritage and a mentor to emerging religious leaders.

In a statement of condolence, Ondo State Governor Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa praised Aladesawe as “a distinguished cleric, a beacon of spiritual wisdom, and an enduring inspiration to the Muslim community and society at large.”

Governor Aiyedatiwa, in a message personally issued in Akure, remarked, “Sheikh Aladesawe devoted his life to serving Allah (SWT) and humanity. His legacy of promoting peace, unity, and moral integrity will be cherished by all.”

He further expressed, “It is with deep grief that we mourn the loss of Sheikh (Dr.) Imam Alhaji Mayor Ahmad Olagoke Aladesawe, who until his passing at 91, led as the Chief Imam of Owo and chaired the League of Imams and Alfas in Ondo State, while also serving as Secretary-General for the Southwest, Edo, and Delta States.”

“On behalf of the government and people of Ondo State, I extend sincere sympathies to his family, the Muslim Ummah, and the entire Owo community. Though we grieve his loss, we find comfort in his life’s profound faith, knowledge, and positive influence.”

“We beseech Almighty Allah (SWT) to forgive his shortcomings, grant him the highest paradise, Aljannah Firdaus, and provide solace to all who mourn this monumental loss.”
