NSC Unveils Revised Guidelines For Sports Federations Boards’ Elections

NSC Launches Exciting New Guidelines to Transform Sports Federations Boards’ Elections

0

In a decisive effort to bolster transparency and uphold integrity within Nigeria’s sports administration, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has introduced updated regulations governing the election procedures for the boards of the National Sports Federations (NSFs).

These newly issued guidelines provide a detailed structure aimed at ensuring that leadership positions within the country’s sports federations are filled by individuals who are both competent and trustworthy.

As highlighted in the preamble of the document, the election process is fundamental to the effective management, success, and growth of sports across Nigeria. The NSC underscores that implementing clear and transparent electoral rules is crucial for aligning the nation’s sports governance with global standards.

The framework outlines the makeup of NSF boards, eligibility requirements for candidates, election protocols, and the formation of dedicated electoral committees. Oversight of the elections will be jointly managed by the NSC and the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), which will serve as impartial observers to guarantee fairness and openness throughout the process. This approach ensures that only candidates with exemplary character and qualifications are considered, while also promoting inclusivity.

Each NSF board, according to the revised rules, will comprise 14 members: a President, a Vice President, and twelve additional members as stipulated by their respective constitutions. Importantly, the boards will include representatives from diverse groups such as regional zones, athletes, coaches, military and paramilitary personnel, international sports organizations, and advocacy groups championing women’s participation in sports.

Regarding candidate eligibility, the guidelines specify several criteria:

– Candidates must be Nigerian citizens aged 25 or older (with athlete representatives eligible from age 18), hold at least a Secondary School Certificate or an equivalent qualification, have a clean criminal record, demonstrate high ethical standards, refrain from any negative conduct toward the NSC or NOC, and provide proof of active involvement in sports within six months prior to the election.

The election timeline begins with the distribution of nomination forms on September 6, 2025, followed by a series of deadlines and election-related activities, culminating in the national elections scheduled for October 18, 2025, at the MKO Abiola National Stadium. Voting will be conducted through secret ballots, with stringent prohibitions against proxy voting and any electoral misconduct. Additionally, the NSC has put in place procedures for handling complaints and appeals, ensuring candidates have formal channels to address any disputes arising during the election.

Dr. (Mrs.) Kehinde Ajayi, NSC’s Director of Press, highlighted the significance of these guidelines in nurturing a culture of fairness and accountability within Nigerian sports governance. She encouraged all qualified individuals to engage actively in the electoral process, emphasizing its critical role in shaping the future landscape of sports in Nigeria.
