During the 2025 summer transfer period, Super Eagles midfielder Joe Aribo was unable to secure a move away from Southampton…
Ex-Nigeria international Ahmed Garba has expressed confidence that Joe Aribo can rejuvenate his career at Southampton following his reintegration into the squad, according to Soccernet.ng.
Garba, who has played for Enyimba International and Kano Pillars, highlighted Paul Onuachu’s achievements in Turkey as a motivating example-Onuachu successfully secured a permanent contract with Trabzonspor.
Onuachu enjoyed an impressive 2023/2024 season on loan at Trabzonspor, netting 17 goals and assisting four times throughout the campaign.
Currently back in Turkey, Onuachu has already scored twice in five appearances in the Süper Lig this season.
Following Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League, Aribo faced a challenging period on the sidelines, which fueled speculation about a potential transfer during the summer window.
Despite the transfer rumors, the former Rangers midfielder has stayed at St Mary’s and is now working his way back into the first team under the guidance of manager Will Still.
Ahmed Garba’s Perspective on Aribo’s Future at Southampton
Garba, who has represented the Super Eagles six times, revealed that he initially hoped Aribo would leave Southampton after their relegation but now believes the midfielder should concentrate on reclaiming his spot in the squad.
“At first, I thought it would be best for Aribo to move on after Southampton dropped to the Championship, but since that didn’t happen, it’s crucial he reintegrates and gets back on the pitch,” Garba shared exclusively with Footy-Africa.
“Being sidelined for an extended period isn’t ideal for any player, even though I understand the circumstances. It’s vital for him to start playing regularly again. Take Onuachu as an example-he left and has now found stability playing in Turkey. From what I know, Aribo hasn’t featured in any matches this season.
“He’s a talented and inventive midfielder who could be a valuable asset for Southampton if given the opportunity. He’ll need to put in extra effort to break into the lineup, but I have faith in his capabilities.”
At 29 years old, Aribo still has two years remaining on his contract with Southampton and is determined to impress manager Will Still as the club targets an immediate return to the Premier League.
