NECO Takes Action: Nine Supervisors Blacklisted for Misconduct

The National Examinations Council (NECO) has revealed that nine examination supervisors from five different states are set to be blacklisted due to misconduct during the exams.

Recently, NECO published the results for the 2025 Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) for candidates registered through schools, marking the conclusion of the exam cycle 54 days after the final paper was administered.

At the announcement held at the Council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State, on Wednesday, September 17, the Registrar and Chief Executive, Professor Dantani Wushishi, disclosed that a total of 1,367,210 candidates initially registered for the exams.

Out of these, 685,514 males and 681,696 females were expected to sit for the exams, but the actual attendance recorded was 1,358,339 candidates, comprising 680,299 males and 678,047 females.

Professor Wushishi highlighted that 818,492 candidates, which is 60.24%, achieved five credits or more, including passes in both English Language and Mathematics.

Additionally, 1,144,496 candidates, representing 84.26%, secured five credits or higher regardless of their performance in English and Mathematics.

Reaffirming NECO’s strict stance against examination fraud, the Registrar emphasized that rigorous standards were upheld throughout the entire examination process, from planning to the release of results.

He further revealed that investigations uncovered 38 schools across 13 states involved in widespread cheating incidents affecting entire schools. These institutions will be summoned for discussions before sanctions are imposed.

In total, 3,878 candidates were implicated in various forms of malpractice during the 2025 exams, a significant decrease compared to 10,094 cases recorded in 2024. This improvement is attributed to enhanced supervision by the Council’s Governing Board, management, and senior staff.

Regarding the supervisors, nine individuals-three from Rivers State, one from Niger, three from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja, and one each from Kano and Ogun states-have been recommended for blacklisting from future NECO examinations.

Professor Wushishi also addressed challenges faced in Adamawa State, where communal classes in eight schools led to the suspension of exams in those institutions. He noted that 13 subjects were affected by this disruption.

Efforts are underway through discussions with the Adamawa State government to reschedule and conduct the exams for the affected schools.

Looking ahead, the Registrar mentioned that the 2025 SSCE results might be the final ones released during his tenure, which is set to conclude in July 2026 after his first four-year term.

He praised the NECO staff for their dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to excellence, stating, “Your intellectual diligence, careful attention to quality, and adherence to ethical principles have guaranteed that we provide results that are reliable and respected by students, educational institutions, and the wider community.”
