Within just an hour of Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s formal return to the Government House on Friday, the Rivers Elders and Leaders Forum (RIVELF) delivered a compelling message emphasizing reconciliation, solidarity, and optimism for the state’s future.
The Forum extended its sincere appreciation to all individuals and organizations that played a role in restoring calm in Rivers State, following President Bola Tinubu’s decision to lift the six-month state of emergency and conclude military oversight in the region.
In an official statement issued by RIVELF Chairman and former Deputy Governor Dr. Gabriel Toby, the group warmly welcomed the reinstatement of democratic governance and commended the President for heeding the concerns of Nigerians.
“As we embrace the return of His Excellency, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, GSSRS, Governor of Rivers State, alongside Her Excellency, Professor Ngozi Nma Odu, DSSRS, the Speaker Rt. Hon. Martins Ameawhule, DSSRS, and other members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, we are presented with a rare chance to renew and reconstruct,” Dr. Toby remarked.
He characterized this period as one that calls for calmness and thoughtful consideration from all stakeholders.
“This is a time for tranquility, deep reflection, forgiveness, recommitment, and unity. It is an opportunity to mend divisions, rebuild trust, and channel our efforts toward the advancement of our state and the welfare of its citizens,” he added.
Dr. Toby urged political figures and key players-including the Governor and legislative members-to rise above previous grievances and prioritize healing and progress.
“This fresh chapter demands renewed dedication to public service and exemplary governance. The Governor’s return alongside a fully operational Assembly should signify more than just a political resolution; it must represent a new beginning grounded in accountability, transparency, and integrity. Our leaders must reaffirm their constitutional responsibilities, ensuring that every action taken serves the best interests of the people of Rivers State,” he emphasized.
Highlighting the importance of unity amid shared challenges, Dr. Toby noted that the state’s strength is rooted in its rich cultural and communal diversity.
“Rivers State is endowed with a mosaic of communities, traditions, and cultures, yet we are united by a common destiny. Division only weakens us, while unity empowers us. We must put aside partisan differences and collaborate to address issues such as unemployment, insecurity, deteriorating infrastructure, and environmental concerns,” he stated.
He also appealed to the general public to maintain composure, support democratic institutions, and actively participate in the state’s reconstruction.
“We call on everyone to reject violence and stand firm against those who attempt to sow discord among us,” Dr. Toby urged.
Concluding his message, he expressed hope that this moment would be remembered as a pivotal turning point in Rivers State’s history.
“May this era bring enduring peace, development, and prosperity for future generations,” he said, encouraging all residents to “choose reflection over reaction, forgiveness over conflict, commitment over neglect, and unity over division.”
