Fake Pharmacist Puts Lives at Risk: Police Shut Down Medicine Store in Bauchi

The Bauchi State Police Command has officially closed Hamdala Special Medicine Store located in the Yelwa district of Bauchi city following allegations of malpractice that resulted in severe injury to a girl-drugged-raped-london-park/” title=”Four Men Arrested in Shocking Assault on Teen … in Popular London Park”>teenage girl.
A statement released on Friday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakil, detailed the circumstances leading to the shutdown.
According to Wakil, the police-arrest-transformer-vandals/” title=”… Nab Two Suspected Transformer Vandals in Yobe: Swift Action by Authorities”>police acted upon a formal complaint submitted by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management concerning Ibrahim, the proprietor of the pharmacy, who was accused of negligence and mistreatment of a patient.
He stated, “The complaint highlighted that Ibrahim, also known locally as ‘Degree,’ runs a pharmaceutical outlet in Yelwa. A 15-year-old girl named Maryam Magaji was brought to his store for treatment of malaria. She was given an injection which caused serious physical harm.”
“Subsequently, Maryam was transferred to a hospital where medical experts confirmed that the injuries were directly linked to the injection administered at the store.”
The police promptly apprehended the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Ibrahim Hassan Mamman, residing at Isa Yuguda Guest House in Bauchi.
“During questioning, Ibrahim admitted to the charges. He recounted that on July 1, 2025, the victim’s brother visited his store with Maryam, who exhibited symptoms of malaria and typhoid. Although Ibrahim initially recommended oral medication, the brother insisted on injections. Ibrahim then administered an 80mg intramuscular injection daily for three days. Two weeks later, Maryam’s health deteriorated, leading to her hospitalization at Bayara Hospital,” the report added.
Further inquiries revealed that Ibrahim lacks both a pharmacist’s license and medical qualifications.
Additionally, expired medications, including Tuxil suspensions produced by Fidson Healthcare Plc and Tuyil Pharmaceuticals Ltd., were seized from the premises.
This incident underscores the escalating issue of unregulated pharmaceutical operations in Bauchi and nationwide.
In May 2022, the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) shut down 469 unregistered pharmacies and patent medicine shops in Bauchi due to illegal operations, poor drug storage, and unauthorized clinical services.
During a similar crackdown in July 2024, PCN inspected 762 outlets in Bauchi, sealing 571 for comparable violations and warning that such unlicensed activities jeopardize patient safety and treatment efficacy.
Between 2018 and 2022, PCN reportedly closed 19,059 illicit pharmaceutical establishments out of over 27,000 inspected and arrested numerous vendors engaged in hazardous practices.
In a separate case, the Bauchi Police also confirmed the arrest of Zuwaira Hassan, accused of violently abusing her 10-year-old stepdaughter in Magama Gumau, Toro Local Government Area.
Wakil explained that the victim’s uncle, Yahuza Usman, reported that Zuwaira inflicted harm by inserting a heated metal spoon into the child’s private area after accusing her of witchcraft.
Police officers rescued the girl and took her to General Hospital, Toro, while detaining both Zuwaira and a traditional healer, Fatima Abdullahi, who allegedly encouraged the abuse.
“Investigations revealed that Zuwaira believed her two sons’ recurring nightmares about the girl were caused by witchcraft. She consulted a herbalist who initially demanded N150,000 but accepted N40,000 for supposed protective remedies. Subsequently, Zuwaira ordered her sons to restrain the girl before inserting the hot spoon,” Wakil disclosed.
The Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has mandated that both matters be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department for thorough and confidential inquiry.
He pledged that justice will be pursued diligently to safeguard the rights and welfare of the victims.
