As preparations near completion for Africa’s inaugural E1 electric powerboat championship, the Lagos State government has issued a strong advisory against careless waste disposal within the city and its surrounding lagoons.
Gbenga Omotoso, the Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, made this declaration during the E1 Lagos GP Immersion Session held at the LASWA Boat Jetty in Falomo, Ikoyi. He portrayed Lagos as a dynamic metropolis known for its resilience and innovation, continually reinventing itself and drawing global interest.
He emphasized that the championship will highlight Lagos as a vibrant center of opportunity, enterprise, and endurance, with the world’s gaze turning to its waterways as the city prepares to host the E1 Lagos GP from October 3 to 5 on Victoria Island.
Omotoso described the forthcoming E1 Lagos GP not merely as a sporting spectacle but as a showcase of scientific precision, sustainability, and meticulous planning. The growing enthusiasm surrounding the event reflects Lagos’ inventive spirit and immense potential.
He encouraged Lagos residents to fully engage with the prospects this aquatic sporting event presents. “This goes beyond racing boats; it demands scientific expertise, strategic coordination, and exactness. It underscores Lagos’ commitment to sustainability, innovation, and accountability. Truly, Lagos is both the city of today and the city of tomorrow,” he remarked.
Highlighting environmental stewardship, Omotoso stressed the importance of preserving Lagos’ natural surroundings. “Our environment is the legacy we leave for future generations. It is imperative that we protect it and maintain the cleanliness of our lagoons. Visitors will be arriving, and it is essential they witness Lagos’ dedication to sustainable practices,” he added.
Mr. Sam Egube, chairman of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) and deputy chief of staff to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, underscored the global importance of the E1 Lagos GP. He pointed out that Lagos is rapidly emerging as Africa’s nexus for technology, culture, and business innovation.
Egube noted that the event provides a platform for Lagos to demonstrate its capability to host international-caliber events, while also positioning the city as a leading destination for innovation and cultural exchange. “The world is beginning to recognize Lagos as a resilient city brimming with untapped opportunities. This recognition fuels investor confidence and keeps Lagos at the forefront of Africa’s developmental narrative,” he stated.
Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, General Manager of the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), reassured stakeholders that robust arrangements are underway to ensure the event proceeds seamlessly and efficiently.
