The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Dennis Idahosa, has urged gospel musicians to center their artistry on the core doctrines and ethical teachings of Christianity.
Speaking in Benin during a meeting with the Fellowship of Gospel Music Ministers of Nigeria (FOGMMON), Idahosa emphasized the unique role gospel music plays in guiding listeners toward spiritual reflection and repentance.
According to a statement from his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Friday Aghedo, the deputy governor highlighted that gospel music’s distinction lies in its powerful message that draws people closer to God, setting it apart from secular or mainstream music.
“I encourage our gospel artists to create music that truly reflects the foundational values and beliefs of Christianity, reminiscent of the songs we cherished in our youth,” he remarked.
“Those earlier hymns served as divine messages-Rhema-from God. We must avoid crafting gospel music that mimics secular tunes. It’s time to revisit our creative process and focus on producing worship songs that genuinely glorify God,” he added.
Idahosa assured the gospel community of the state government’s full support in making their upcoming international conference in October a landmark event.
He also praised the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for selecting Edo State as the host, recognizing the state’s readiness to welcome such a significant gathering.
“During our campaign, we pledged to use governance as a platform to advance Christianity,” he noted. “One initiative we plan to launch is a music talent hunt, as worship through music remains one of the most profound ways to honor God.”
Earlier, FOGMMON’s national leader, Louis Imafidon, shared that the association’s membership spans across Nigeria and extends into the diaspora.
The organization’s leadership appealed for government partnership and active participation to ensure the success and credibility of the forthcoming event.
In another engagement, Idahosa met with the management team of Zios Confectionery, led by CEO Mrs. Ezeigbe Ozioma, who briefed him on their upcoming “Feed-a-Thon” initiative scheduled for next month.
The deputy governor pledged his personal endorsement and promised to bring the project to the governor’s attention to secure further collaboration and support.
Additionally, Idahosa engaged with the executive officers of the War Against Indiscipline (WAI) Brigade, Edo State Command, headed by Commander Monday Eson.
He committed to partnering with them on awareness campaigns and sensitization programs, particularly focusing on environmental cleanliness and sanitation efforts.
