UN Champions Justice for GBV Survivors in Bauchi: Breaking Barriers, Empowering Voices

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has emphasized the urgent need to enhance rapid access to justice for survivors of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Bauchi State. They highlighted that the success of these efforts hinges on the steadfast dedication of key institutions to support and equip frontline service providers effectively.

During a comprehensive two-day workshop held in partnership with the Bauchi State Ministry of Justice, Deborah Tabara, UNFPA’s State Programme Officer, underscored that the ability of survivors to obtain justice is largely influenced by the competence and commitment of government ministries, law enforcement agencies, and the judiciary.

Ms. Tabara praised Bauchi State for establishing a model framework that other states could emulate, while also recognizing the relentless efforts of stakeholders who tirelessly advocate for survivors’ rights.

“Bauchi is leading the way in GBV response, with a level of cooperation that sets a high standard for others to follow,” she remarked.

According to LEADERSHIP, the training brought together Police Investigative Officers (IPOs), prosecutors, judicial officials, and representatives from civil society across all 20 local government areas. The program aimed to bolster response strategies and safeguard the rights of survivors.

Yusuf Adamu, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, explained that the selection of participants was intentional, given their pivotal role in delivering justice to survivors and ensuring perpetrators face accountability.

“Gender-Based Violence remains one of the most critical human rights challenges confronting our state,” Adamu stated.

“Although we have enacted laws, policies, and institutional reforms, their effectiveness depends entirely on those tasked with enforcement. This training is a vital opportunity to enhance skills, foster collaboration, and fortify the justice system for survivors,” he added.

He further stressed that combating GBV demands more than just legislation; it requires persistent and proactive efforts from all responsible parties to thoroughly investigate cases, prosecute offenders, and guarantee justice for victims.

Maimuna Ibrahim, the GBV Desk Officer at the Bauchi Ministry of Justice, highlighted the profound human toll of these incidents. She recounted a recent distressing case involving a young girl in Toro local government area, whose stepmother inflicted severe burns on her private parts using a heated metal spoon.

“Each GBV case leaves deep emotional scars,” Ibrahim said, describing the incident as profoundly tragic. She reaffirmed the ministry‘s unwavering commitment to securing justice for this child and all other survivors throughout the state.
