The Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman’s Cup has announced that the football competition is set to kick off in October this year.
Hon. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, who chairs both the LOC and Conference 57, shared with reporters in Lagos that the APC Lagos State Chapter Chairman’s Football Cup is a strategic initiative aligned with President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He emphasized that the tournament aims to tap into the abundant talents within the lagos-submits-bid-to-host-2026-national-youth-games/” title=”… submits bid to host 2026 National Youth Games”>youth population, channeling their potential towards national development.
Olowa further explained that the Under-20 players’ competition is designed to engage approximately five million young Nigerians residing in Lagos State. This initiative was developed in support of Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, Chairman of the APC Lagos State Chapter.
“This community-based league focuses on uncovering hidden talents. It provides young people with a positive platform that not only nurtures their sporting ambitions but also opens pathways to better livelihoods,” he stated.
“Matches will be held across the 57 Local Council wards in Lagos State, from which the top teams will advance to the finals,” Olowa added.
He expressed optimism that the tournament will serve as a springboard for many young athletes, offering them exposure to opportunities that could shape their future careers.
While underscoring that the competition is entirely non-political, the organisers highlighted its role in promoting youth engagement in the democratic process, particularly encouraging the registration and acquisition of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
“To facilitate this, arrangements are underway to set up PVC registration points at the tournament venues, making it convenient for participants and spectators alike,” Olowa noted.
Moreover, this project is being executed in partnership with various private sector stakeholders and football governing bodies, including the federal government’s football agency, the Lagos State Ministry of Youths and Social Development, and other relevant institutions. Their expertise will be crucial in ensuring the tournament runs smoothly.
Hon. Adedola Jokomba, Secretary of the APC Lagos State Chapter, revealed that the official launch of the tournament will take place at the APC Lagos State Chapter Secretariat in Acme, Ikeja, Lagos, in October 2025. The event is expected to be graced by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the Chief Host, alongside members of the State Legislature and Executive Council.
Jokomba highlighted that beyond sports, the tournament is envisioned to reduce youth-related crime, empower young people, and connect them with global communities.
