The Development Research and Project Centre (dRPC) has intensified its commitment to enhancing digital literacy and combating gender-based violence in schools within marginalized areas of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). This is being achieved through comprehensive training programs, improved infrastructure, and scholarship provisions.

By allocating a ₦5 million grant to the local NGO Rising Hope Girls’ Educational Foundation (RHGE), dRPC has facilitated the creation of digital learning centers across 10 communities in the FCT. Additionally, 150 educators have received specialized training in digital skills, and 20 scholarships have been awarded to underprivileged students in Chikakore and neighboring areas.

At the inauguration of a new digital laboratory at Junior Secondary School Chikakore, Kubwa, Dr. Judith-Ann Walker, Executive Director of dRPC, highlighted that this initiative is part of the NGO Support Initiative (NSI). The program aims to mitigate the adverse effects of recent funding reductions on grassroots organizations.

Representing Dr. Walker, Hassan Aliyu Karofi, the Centre’s Director of Partnerships, Development, and Communication, reaffirmed dRPC’s dedication to advancing education and empowering community-based groups.

“Following the cessation of USAID funding by the United States government last year, many local NGOs faced significant challenges. With over three decades of experience, we recognize the struggles of smaller indigenous organizations, and this initiative is designed to sustain their vital contributions,” Dr. Walker explained.

David Ahanor, Project Director at RHGE, described the digital labs as fully equipped with computers, interactive whiteboards, and internet connectivity, serving as essential resources for both students and teachers. He emphasized that the project addresses critical issues such as limited digital access, insufficient teacher resources, and the prevalence of gender-based violence in schools.

“We have successfully trained more than 150 teachers in Artificial Intelligence literacy and safe school protocols, while over 500 students have participated in awareness programs on digital rights and school safety. Furthermore, community outreach efforts have engaged upwards of 400 parents and youths through outdoor awareness campaigns,” Ahanor stated.

The program also focuses on providing financial support to 100 girls through school fee grants, with 20 beneficiaries selected from each participating community school. Educators in Byzhin, Kubwa, and Dutsen-Alhaji are already integrating AI technologies into their lesson planning and championing initiatives for safer school environments.

Ishaya Dogo, Principal of JSS Chikakore, praised the project as “a shining light of opportunity” for children in underserved regions. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the donors, noting, “The donation of desktop computers will significantly enhance our students’ learning experience, and the scholarships will open doors to a brighter future for our children. This generosity will always be remembered.”

Dr. Alhassan Sule, Acting Executive Chairman of the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB), lauded the initiative, emphasizing that education is a collective endeavor.

Represented by Nsa Rabo, Deputy Director of Curriculum, UBEB encouraged more NGOs to join forces with the government in advancing digital education efforts.

The launch event was attended by UBEB officials, members of the school’s Parents Teachers Association (PTA), and community leaders including Chief John Azaecheyi and his council from Chikakore.
