Billy Vigar, a former Arsenal academy forward, tragically passed away at just 21 years old after sustaining a critical head injury during a football match.
While representing Chichester City FC in an Isthmian League Premier Division clash against Wingate and Finchley last Saturday, Vigar suffered a severe accident. Although initial reports indicate he collided with a concrete barrier, the club has yet to officially disclose the precise circumstances surrounding the injury.
In a heartfelt statement released by his family on Thursday, they conveyed their profound sorrow, emphasizing their devastation that this tragedy occurred while Billy was engaged in the sport he cherished.
“Following a serious brain injury sustained last weekend, Billy was placed in an induced coma. He underwent surgery on Tuesday aimed at improving his chances of recovery. Despite these efforts, the injury was insurmountable, and he sadly passed away Thursday morning,” the family shared.
“The overwhelming support and messages following the initial update highlight the deep affection and respect Billy commanded within the football community.”
Born in Worthing, Vigar’s football journey began at his local club, Hove Rivervale FC, before joining Arsenal’s academy at age 14. He made an immediate impact at Hale End, netting 17 goals in his debut season.
Despite facing a significant hamstring injury that hampered his first year as a scholar, he secured a scholarship in 2020 and signed professional terms with Arsenal in 2022. He featured prominently in Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy competitions.
Renowned for his adaptability, Vigar excelled in multiple attacking positions and even stepped into defensive roles when required, demonstrating his dedication to the team.
Arsenal honored his memory, describing him as “fast, strong, and fiercely committed,” and recalling his passion for football.
The club’s tribute stated:
“Billy joined our academy at 14 after being scouted from Hove Rivervale FC and quickly established himself as a prolific striker at Hale End, scoring 17 goals in his first season.
In 2020, his impressive performances earned him a scholarship, joining the full-time intake alongside players like Charles Sagoe Jr, Remy Mitchell, Omari Hutchinson, Charlie Patino, and Brook Norton-Cuffy.
Although his initial scholar year was disrupted by a serious hamstring injury, he bounced back in his second year, scoring four goals in 18 under-18 appearances and signing professional terms at the end of the 2021-22 season.
Billy went on to represent us in PL2 and the EFL Trophy, showcasing his versatility by playing across forward positions and even covering defensive duties, reflecting his commitment to the coaching staff and teammates.
Beyond his talent, Billy will be remembered for his genuine love of the game, pride in representing Arsenal-he once described the day he was scouted as ‘the most important of his life’-and his warm personality cherished by teammates and coaches alike.
Our heartfelt condolences are with the Vigar family and all who knew him during this profoundly difficult time.”

During his career, Vigar also had loan spells with Derby County, Eastbourne Borough, and Hastings United.
Derby County expressed their “deep sorrow” at the news, while Hastings United described the loss as “heartbreaking.”
“Billy spent the latter half of the 2022-23 season on loan with our academy, making several appearances for the Under-21 squad. Everyone at the club extends their deepest sympathies to his family and friends during this tragic period,” Derby stated.
A representative from Hastings United added:
“We are all deeply saddened by the passing of Billy Vigar. His time with Hastings United will always be fondly remembered. Our thoughts remain with his family and friends.”
Eastbourne Borough, where he made 32 appearances last season, also expressed shock and sorrow:
“Both our football and non-football staff are devastated by this news. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Billy’s family at this incredibly difficult time.”
The Football Association extended their sympathies as well, offering support to Vigar’s loved ones and the Chichester City community.
The FA’s statement read: “We offer our sincere condolences to Billy’s family, friends, and everyone connected with Chichester City FC during this heartbreaking time.”
In light of this tragedy, Chichester City announced the postponement of their upcoming match against Lewes scheduled for the weekend.
