FIRS Launches Trust Fund to Support Families of Afriland Fire Victims

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has announced the establishment of a robust welfare program aimed at providing enduring support to the families of employees who pass away while in service. This initiative follows the recent tragic fire in Lagos that resulted in the loss of four staff members.

During a commemorative event honoring the deceased, FIRS Executive Chairman, Dr. Zacch Adedeji, revealed plans to create a trust fund, guarantee automatic employment opportunities, and offer full educational scholarships for the children of affected employees.

“At FIRS, we consider ourselves more than just an organization; we are a close-knit family. When one member is lost, the void is deeply felt by all,” Adedeji expressed. “This heartbreaking incident has reinforced our shared duty-not only in revenue collection but in safeguarding the welfare of those who form the backbone of our Service.”

Unlike previous isolated aid efforts within the public sector, this trust fund is designed to endure beyond the current leadership. Adedeji emphasized that the fund will be officially institutionalized, with bereaved families entrusted with its management to ensure accountability and long-term viability.

The initiative follows the September 16 fire at Afriland Towers on Lagos Island, which claimed the lives of four employees-George Faith Ekelikhotse, David Oluwafemi Sunday-Jatto, Onyemelukwe Nkem Agnes, and Ifaranmaye Peter. Survivors have criticized the inadequate fire response in the Balogun commercial district, which exacerbated the disaster.

Addressing the families, Adedeji offered heartfelt reassurance: “We stand firmly beside you and will continue to support you through these challenging times. Know that you are not alone. I personally vow that this institution will be a steadfast source of comfort and assistance. For those who can speak, we remain hopeful. We trust in our compassionate God, who watches over all, to grant eternal peace to their souls.”

He continued, “We pray for strength and courage for all of us left behind. As we honor their memory today, let us recommit ourselves to the principles of education, integrity, and scientific advancement. Let their legacy inspire our leadership and dedication.”

“Together, let us uphold the spirit of unity and determination that fuels our vision for this nation. As part of our service policy, I have reviewed the profiles of our departed colleagues, whose tragic fates have been shared widely online. It is not through silence but through action that we honor their memory.”

Nasiru Usman, Deputy Manager of Tax at the Lagos Island FIRS office and a survivor of the fire, called on regulatory authorities to enforce stricter fire safety regulations in high-rise commercial buildings. “Had there been a swift response despite the heavy foot traffic, the outcome might have been less devastating,” he remarked.

During the memorial, colleagues paid tribute to the late employees, describing them as “quiet achievers” whose dedication and humility significantly contributed to national progress.
