Lawyer Warns Nigerians: Police Have No Right to Search Your Phone!

  • Legal expert Chisom Agbafor has warned Nigerians against permitting police officers to search their mobile phones, emphasizing that such actions are illegal.
  • She pointed out that many individuals hand over their devices out of fear or lack of awareness, underscoring the importance of understanding and asserting one’s rights.

Chisom Agbafor, a Nigerian attorney, has ignited discussions online by reminding the public about their legal protections during police encounters.

In a widely shared message on X, she clarified that law enforcement officers do not possess the legal right to search an individual’s smartphone. She further explained that many Nigerians relinquish their phones due to intimidation or unfamiliarity with their rights, which she described as a consequence of insufficient legal knowledge.

This statement has sparked extensive conversations, with numerous social media users recounting their own experiences of unlawful searches by security personnel.

In a separate development, Joseph Aloba, father of the late artist Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, went live on TikTok to dispel rumors about a romantic involvement with justice advocate Rich Grace.

During the live broadcast, he addressed a circulating audio clip in which a woman, claiming to be his sister, accused him of having a relationship with Rich Grace. Aloba clarified that the woman is not related to him by blood.

“I want to make it clear to the public that the woman in the audio is not my biological sister. I only met her through the Justice for Mohbad movement. She has been causing harm to my family. I sent her the audio, and she claimed she was protecting me from evil,” he explained.

He strongly refuted the allegations, emphasizing that such thoughts had never occurred to him.

“I am stating publicly that I have never dated nor been intimate with Rich Grace. It has never crossed my mind. People fabricate lies from their homes. Rich Grace is a married woman who has been consistently present at every coroner’s court session. She has dedicated herself fully to seeking justice for Mohbad. People must be cautious about spreading falsehoods to avoid creating long-lasting problems after the Justice for Mohbad campaign,” he warned.

A clip from his live session was circulated online to support his claims.

Here are some reactions from social media users:

@ibukunolaabiola: “I truly sympathize with Mohbad; he found no peace in life and none after death. May God prevent us from experiencing such family tragedies.”

@classy_ohunene: “Jossy, the father figure of all TikTokers, a true hero.”

@rphoenixak123: “Whenever this man notices he’s no longer trending, he comes up with another story. Rest in peace, Moh.”

@kingnifsy101__: “The confusion has begun.”

@empresssusanofficial: “Baba Mohbad, please handle this matter properly! Hmmmm.”
