Two passionate golf advocates, Brigadier General Mustapha Onoyiveta (retired) and prominent entrepreneur Chief Samuel Ayanmele, have played pivotal roles in enhancing the Tukur Yusuf Buratai International Golf Resort and Country Club (TYB-IGRCC) in Abuja.
This development coincides with the festivities celebrating Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary Golf Tournament hosted at the club.

These new amenities were officially inaugurated last Friday by former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Faruk Yahaya (retired).
General Mustapha Onoyiveta, who once served as Aide de Camp to the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, generously provided the Back Nine Starter shed. He explained that this facility is designed to optimize tournament management and elevate the overall experience for players.
“This project is my way of giving back to the sport and the community,” Onoyiveta shared. “The Back Nine Starter helps organize tee-off schedules, facilitates smoother player movement, and offers a convenient resting spot.” He added, “Golf is still emerging in Nigeria, and initiatives like this are crucial for its advancement.”
Chief Samuel Ayanmele, affectionately called ‘Onwa Ngwa’, gifted the Halfway House to the club. He highlighted that the structure provides much-needed shelter for golfers during adverse weather conditions.
“During my first game here, I noticed the absence of a refuge for players when it rained,” Ayanmele recounted. “That inspired me to establish a Halfway House where players can relax and refresh.” He also mentioned, “I have supported similar projects at Karishi and the Naval Golf Course. Golf instills discipline and builds character.”
In his remarks while commissioning the facilities, General Yahaya commended the donors for their significant impact on the growth of golf in Nigeria.
“These contributions are both timely and admirable,” he remarked. “They demonstrate a strong dedication to the military and the sport of golf, which fosters discipline and promotes health. As Nigeria celebrates 65 years, this partnership between public and private sectors exemplifies what can be achieved.”
“Golf embodies military principles such as strategy, patience, and resilience. I urge more involvement from both military personnel and civilians.”
Dr. James Agbonhese, Chairman of the organising committee for the 65th Independence Anniversary Golf Tournament, revealed that the event has attracted over 400 golfers for the week-long competition. He also noted that the tournament will pay tribute to both active and retired Nigerian Army officers.
The tournament began on September 27 with players in categories 3 and 4. The TYB Professionals and Invitational matches are slated for September 28. The highlight event will occur on October 1, Nigeria’s Independence Day, featuring Category 1 players, followed by rounds for sponsors and guests, culminating in an awards ceremony and prize distribution.
Agbonhese further highlighted that the tournament expects participation from more than 100 female golfers, including three professionals.
