Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Nigeria’s First Lady, has publicly embraced forgiveness and tranquility, choosing to rise above bitterness-even towards those who betrayed her husband during the 2023 general elections.
This revelation comes from her recently published 52-page memoir, The Journey of Grace: Giving Thanks in All Things, unveiled on Sunday in celebration of her tinubu-65th-birthday-praises-akpabio-abiru/” title=”Akpabio and Abiru Celebrate Remi …'s Inspiring Journey on His 65th Birthday”>65th birthday.
Within the pages, Mrs. Tinubu shares an intimate account of her spiritual evolution from 2021 to 2025, reflecting on her husband’s presidential campaign, the contentious 2023 elections, and the profound insights she gained about loyalty, betrayal, and unwavering faith.
She writes, “I harbor no ill will toward anyone. The question is, how did I overcome the sting of betrayal? I recognized the undeniable presence of grace, and the Holy Spirit consistently comforted me, urging me not to seek revenge but to trust that justice belongs to God. My role is simply to thank Him for fighting on our behalf.”
The memoir’s introduction is penned by Dr. Folashade Olukoya of the Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries.
Mrs. Tinubu candidly reveals that throughout her husband’s 14-year pursuit of the presidency, some of his closest confidants failed to offer support when it was most crucial.
“Many I expected to back the vision, based on past connections, were hesitant. Some were supportive, others indifferent, and a few declined outright. Several preferred to wait and see the outcome before committing,” she disclosed.
Despite these challenges, she found solace and strength in scripture and the example set by Jesus Christ.
“I chose to release resentment and focus on doing good, following the example of my Savior as described in Acts 10:38. I hold no grudges, understanding human frailty-man is not God. Trust should never be placed solely in people; when they assist, it is God working through them. When they withdraw, it signifies the completion of their divine assignment,” she explained, referencing Jeremiah 17:5-8 and Hebrews 12:2.
Her commitment to forgiveness was further inspired by the biblical call to express gratitude in all situations.
“One morning, while reflecting quietly, the Holy Spirit impressed upon me the message from 1 Thessalonians 5:18-not to give thanks in some things, but in everything, both positive and negative. This became the guiding theme for my book,” she shared.
A devoted member of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, where she was appointed Assistant Pastor in 2018, Mrs. Tinubu also recounted the criticism she endured within her church community following her husband’s controversial choice of a Muslim-Muslim ticket in 2022, describing it as a “bitter pill” to swallow.
Nevertheless, she maintained her commitment to peace rather than harboring resentment.
“The Word of God instructs us to bless our enemies, not curse them, and to do good to those who persecute us. Whatever we do, we should do it unto the Lord. I remain at peace, dedicating myself to the progress and prosperity of Nigeria,” she affirmed.
LEADERSHIP notes that these reflections come less than three years after the 2023 elections, one of Nigeria’s most polarizing political events in recent memory. President Bola Tinubu, representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), secured victory with 8.79 million votes, surpassing Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP). The election results were subsequently upheld by both the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal and the Supreme Court.
