As Nigeria joins the international community in observing World Teachers’ Day 2025, the Federal Government has once again emphasized its dedication to enhancing the welfare and acknowledgment of educators nationwide.
During a symposium held on Monday in anticipation of the Sunday celebration, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, together with the Minister of State for Education, reiterated this commitment.
The 2025 World Teachers’ Day theme, “Recasting Teaching as a Collaborative Profession,” highlights the importance of teamwork among educators.
Observed annually on October 5, World Teachers’ Day honors teachers worldwide, recognizing their indispensable role in shaping education and society at large.
Established in 1994 through a joint initiative by UNESCO, the International Labour Organisation (ILO), Education International (EI), and UNICEF, the day commemorates the 1966 ILO/UNESCO recommendation on the status of teachers.
In his address, the Minister portrayed teachers as guardians of knowledge, shapers of character, and the visionary planners of the nation’s future.
He praised educators as the cornerstone of every profession, emphasizing that their dedication sustains the country’s progress. “Truly, teaching is the most vital and noble profession in our nation. Who trains doctors? Who educates engineers? Who mentors professors? It is the teacher. This is why the government is diligently working to enhance your benefits. There is hope ahead,” he remarked.
Highlighting the value of collaboration, he noted, “Teaching has often been a solitary endeavor, but when educators unite, students gain immensely. They experience more dynamic learning and witness the strength of collective effort and shared accountability.”
The Minister also assured that the government remains committed to offering teachers the recognition, professional development, and resources necessary for their success. “To achieve top-tier education, we need exceptional teachers. And to nurture exceptional teachers, we must provide them with the respect, support, training, and collaboration they deserve,” he emphasized.
He lauded teachers for producing graduates who excel on the global stage. “Across the world, Nigerian professionals are known for their excellence. This is a testament to your hard work. While monetary rewards may never fully reflect your value, take pride in your contributions. On behalf of the President, I salute your sacrifices, dedication, and unwavering commitment to nation-building,” he concluded.
