A tragic incident unfolded during a Spanish league match when a 19-year-old goalkeeper lost his life following a head injury sustained on the field. Raul Ramirez Osorio collapsed after a collision in the 60th minute of the game on Saturday, September 27, leading to cardiac arrest. Immediate life-saving efforts were made by his coach and a nursing student present among the spectators, who administered mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and helped stabilize him. He was urgently transported to Marques de Valdecilla Hospital in Santander, where he was admitted to intensive care in critical condition. Despite medical intervention, Raul passed away on Monday, September 29, two days after the incident.

Raul’s team, Colindres, competing in Spain’s fifth-tier Tercera Federación league, expressed their support on social media while he remained hospitalized: “We send our strength to our goalkeeper Raul Ramirez and his family. During yesterday’s match against Revilla, he suffered a serious injury and is currently receiving treatment at Valdecilla Hospital.” The regional football authority, the Royal Cantabrian Football Federation (RFCF), released an official statement confirming Raul’s brain death following the accidental collision. They announced that, honoring the family’s wishes, his organs will be donated to help others in need.

The RFCF mourned the loss of the promising young athlete, emphasizing the profound impact of his untimely passing at just 19 years old. In tribute, the federation declared three days of mourning and will hold a minute of silence at all upcoming matches in the league. Their heartfelt condolences were extended to Raul’s loved ones and the entire Colindres Sports Club community, wishing him eternal peace.

The fatal injury occurred as Raul leapt to intercept a cross and collided with an opposing forward. His coach, Rafa de Pena, rushed to his aid when he collapsed unconscious, with the nursing student’s assistance proving crucial in reviving him on the pitch. Unfortunately, a second cardiac arrest during transport to the hospital severely worsened his condition, leading to the suspension of the match.

Jose Angel Pelaez, President of the Royal Cantabrian Football Federation, shared an emotional message on September 28, prior to the confirmation of Raul’s passing: “Today, we face the hardest news we never wanted to share. The entire federation is holding onto hope and praying for the recovery of Colindres’ young goalkeeper. We send him all our love and strength to overcome this immense challenge. Our thoughts are with his parents, sister, family, and girlfriend during this difficult time. Stay strong, Raul.”
