On Monday, the Police Service Commission (PSC) conducted a screening exercise for 30 senior police officers eligible for promotion at its headquarters in Abuja.
The group comprised one assistant inspector general of police, two commissioners, eleven deputy commissioners, and sixteen assistant commissioners, with only one of the seventeen invited officers absent from the assessment.
The evaluation was held in the Solomon Arase conference hall, located on the sixth floor of the Commission’s Corporate Headquarters.
According to Ikechukwu Ani, the commission’s spokesperson, the chairman, DIG Hashimu Argungu (rtd), emphasized that the promotion examination represents a significant and lasting reform in the career advancement process for serving police personnel.
Although this initiative was introduced later than ideal, DIG Argungu highlighted its positive impact in enhancing the professionalism and respectability of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
He further clarified that any officer who fails the promotion exam three times consecutively will be retired at their current rank due to demonstrated lack of competence.
Recognizing the global shift towards skill-based progression, the chairman stressed that police officers aspiring to climb the ranks must adapt to the evolving standards and expectations of the modern era.
Additionally, the PSC is committed to rigorous verification processes to prevent the inadvertent promotion of deceased or retired officers, ensuring integrity in the promotion system.
