On Monday, the Trade Fair International Market in Lagos became the center of unrest as numerous traders took to the streets to voice their opposition to steep increases in shop rents, agent fees, and other charges levied by market management.
Hundreds of merchants blocked off parts of the market, chanting slogans of unity and holding up signs that highlighted their grievances. They accused both the market agents and administrators of imposing arbitrary fees that jeopardize their livelihoods.
“These exorbitant costs are unsustainable,” one vendor expressed with concern. “Rent keeps rising every year, and new charges keep piling on. With sales already down, how are we supposed to survive?”
Another participant shared similar sentiments, describing the fee hikes as exploitative and unfair.
“The financial strain is overwhelming. We cover rent, electricity, security, and now additional fees are being forced upon us. It’s suffocating our businesses,” he explained.
The protest attracted the attention of onlookers and prompted the deployment of security forces to maintain order. Despite the presence of law enforcement, the traders remained resolute, pledging to continue their demonstration until their concerns are addressed.
“We’re not opposed to paying rent, but the rates must be fair. The current increases are pushing many of us to the brink of closure,” another trader told journalists.
As of this report, market officials have not released a formal statement responding to the complaints. Security personnel continue to monitor the area closely to prevent any escalation of conflict.
