The Federal Government has officially announced that Wednesday, October 1, 2025, will be observed as a public holiday in honor of Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day.
This announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, representing the Federal Government.
In a statement released on Monday and signed by Dr. Magdalene Ajani, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, the Minister extended warm congratulations to all Nigerians on this significant national milestone.
He encouraged citizens to uphold their patriotism and place their confidence in the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
The Ministry’s official X (formerly Twitter) account stated, “The Federal Government has designated Wednesday, October 1, 2025, as a public holiday to celebrate Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.”
However, the Independence Day parade originally planned for October 1, 2025, has been officially cancelled.
A communiqué from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, issued in Abuja, clarified that this cancellation does not lessen the importance of the 65th anniversary.
Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations at the SGF’s office, emphasized that all other scheduled events for the celebration will proceed as intended.
“The cancellation does not undermine the significance of this landmark anniversary. The government remains dedicated to commemorating Nigeria’s 65 years of independence with pride and enthusiasm,” the statement affirmed.
The government apologized for any inconvenience this change might cause to Nigerians, the diplomatic corps, and invited guests.
Furthermore, citizens were urged to continue supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reform agenda, as the administration is steadfast in its mission to foster national development and unity.
