65 Years After, Nigeria Needs Sober Reflection – President Of Political Scientists

65 Years On, Nigeria Calls for Deep Reflection – Insights from the President of Political Scientists

Professor Hassan Saliu, the national president of the Nigeria Political Science Association (NPSA), has characterized Nigeria’s 65th independence anniversary as a significant milestone that demands deep and thoughtful consideration.

Speaking from Ilorin, Kwara State, Saliu expressed disappointment over how some Nigerian leaders have repeatedly missed critical opportunities for national advancement.

He emphasized, “Reaching 65 years of independence is a pivotal moment that should inspire serious reflection, especially among those in leadership positions who appear to have wasted numerous chances to propel the country forward. A prime example is the vast revenue generated from Nigeria’s oil exports.”

“It was reasonable to expect that the nation would focus on safeguarding and developing this vital sector. Yet, despite consistent budgetary allocations, public refineries have been largely neglected. While Nigeria grapples with reviving its aging refineries, private initiatives like Aliko Dangote’s refinery have emerged, though not without controversy. The commencement of operations at the Dangote refinery has left some Nigerians disillusioned, as anticipated reductions in fuel prices have not materialized. This situation has also revealed much about the priorities and character of the country’s ruling class. The underperformance of the oil industry is troubling, especially given its failure to catalyze growth in other economic sectors.”

“In general, while some might say progress has been made, there remain critical challenges that warrant urgent attention. One such challenge is the state of democracy in Nigeria, which has yet to translate into tangible improvements in the everyday lives of citizens. The democratic process seems trapped in a repetitive cycle of elections, with the populace perpetually hopeful for change that never arrives.”

“Ironically, the longer Nigeria operates under democratic governance, the deeper the entrenchment of poverty becomes. The core issue lies in the mindset and conduct of those who claim to uphold democratic values. From my perspective, democracy in Nigeria has been reduced to a mere slogan, serving primarily the interests of those in power rather than the people.”

“Frankly, the situation in the country is far from satisfactory. Numerous problems demand resolution, yet public trust in the political system is waning, as evidenced by declining civic engagement. My mission is to help close the widening divide between Nigerians and their government at every level.”

“At 65 years, the spirit of the Nigerian people is notably diminished, presenting a clear challenge to the ruling elite to abandon outdated complacency and the belief that issues will resolve themselves. Such a luxury no longer exists given the harsh realities faced by ordinary citizens. It is imperative that our leaders recalibrate their approach and take decisive actions that prioritize the welfare of the people.”
