Joshua Akinkunmi Akinbode, a Nigerian cinematographer, recently opened up about why he feels he cannot wed a woman resembling his mother, despite his profound admiration for her.
In a heartfelt birthday tribute posted on Monday, September 29, 2025, he conveyed immense appreciation for his mother’s unwavering prayers and selfless sacrifices throughout his life.
He portrayed her as an extraordinary woman-strong, devoted, a relentless cook, and a powerful prayer warrior-yet emphasized that marrying someone like her is not something he envisions for himself.
According to Akinbode, this perspective is not rooted in any lack of respect or gratitude but stems from an understanding that societal dynamics have evolved. He explained that modern relationships demand more than just traditional roles like cooking and providing meals; they require emotional openness, meaningful dialogue, and mutual growth.
He elaborated, “This isn’t a dismissal of my mother’s incredible qualities. She is a remarkable woman whose prayers have moved mountains and whose tireless efforts nourished both body and soul. Her hands lovingly cared for every chore, and her faith was a fortress for our family. I once confidently faced a challenging lecturer, knowing my mother’s prayers were my shield. She embodies strength, goodness, and sacrifice. Still, I cannot marry someone exactly like her.”
He continued, “The world has transformed. The foundation of marriage today extends beyond the kitchen or endless labor. It thrives on heartfelt conversations, vulnerability, and partnerships that foster shared development. While my mother’s sacrifices shaped who I am, the partner I choose must also challenge me intellectually and emotionally, walking beside me in both reason and faith.”
