During the Student Union Government (SUG) election at Ebonyi State University (EBSU), held on the College of Agriculture campus, the Ebonyi State Police Command apprehended three individuals and confiscated a homemade firearm.
According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Joshua Ukandu, and shared with LEADERSHIP, the trio was detained for their involvement in an attempt to interfere with the declaration of the election results.
Ukandu explained that the disruption took place as the election outcomes were being announced, with the suspects reportedly discharging a gunshot to scatter the gathering.
Tragically, the bullet struck a student who was promptly transported to the Federal Teaching Hospital in Abakaliki for urgent medical care.
“Thanks to the prompt action of police personnel present at the scene, the suspects-Lawrence Azubuike, Ibe Kenneth, and Njoku Joshua-were arrested, and the locally fabricated pistol used in the incident was seized,” he stated.
The police confirmed that the suspects remain in custody and will face court proceedings once investigations are finalized.
Furthermore, the State Commissioner of Police, CP Adaku Uche-Anya, reassured the public of the Command’s steadfast dedication to upholding peace, security, and order throughout Ebonyi State.
