Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has effectively resolved the recent labor dispute that brought operations in Emohua local government area to a standstill.
The conflict arose when several employees were not paid their August wages, and some had their contracts abruptly terminated. This situation led the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) to initiate an indefinite strike.
In response, Governor Fubara held a confidential meeting on Tuesday at the Government House in Port Harcourt, bringing together key figures including Dr. Chidi Lloyd, chairman of Emohua local government council; Comrade Clifford Paul, the State chairman of NULGE; and Mr. Israel Amadi, chairman of the Local Government Service Commission.
After the discussions, Comrade Paul declared the strike suspended, reassuring union members that their grievances would be addressed promptly.
“We have reached an agreement. The governor has instructed that this issue be resolved amicably. On behalf of NULGE’s state administrative council, I urge all branch leaders and officials to call off the strike,” Paul stated.
Mr. Amadi described the talks as highly constructive and expressed gratitude to the governor for his intervention.
“The meeting was very productive. The governor provided clear instructions, and we are optimistic that the agreed solutions will be implemented,” he remarked.
Dr. Chidi Lloyd, chairman of Emohua LGA, also praised Governor Fubara’s involvement, emphasizing that the focus was on ensuring transparency throughout the process.
Lloyd commented, “I am grateful for the governor’s timely intervention. This is not about personal interests; our priority is transparency, and the governor has made that very clear.”
