As Nigeria commemorates its 65th Independence Anniversary, Senator Nenadi Esther Usman, the Interim National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), has called on Nigerians to maintain their faith in the nation’s future while insisting on greater accountability from those in leadership.
In a heartfelt message addressed to Nigerians both within the country and abroad, Senator Usman reflected on the numerous obstacles and missed opportunities that have marked Nigeria’s journey since gaining independence in 1960. Despite these setbacks, she emphasized that there remains much to be proud of.
“Our survival as a united and indivisible country, in spite of the many trials over the past six and a half decades, highlights our shared determination and the strength found in our rich diversity and unity,” she remarked.
Describing the current leadership as a heavy burden borne by the populace, the former Finance Minister cautioned against succumbing to hopelessness or apathy.
She urged citizens to sustain their optimism and actively demand transparency and responsibility from their leaders as essential steps toward genuine progress.
“It would be a profound misfortune for a nation that has weathered years of poor governance to now abandon hope. True transformation is only possible when the people rise to hold their leaders accountable-a duty that cannot be fulfilled through passivity or despair,” she asserted.
Senator Usman also appealed to those in authority to lead with compassion, fairness, and openness, underscoring that sustainable development is unattainable without a deliberate focus on the well-being of the people.
She ended her message by expressing confidence in Nigeria’s enduring spirit and ability to surmount current difficulties, affirming that “a brighter dawn awaits” if both leaders and citizens dedicate themselves to the nation’s renewal.
