Digital Transformation Is Lifeline For Nigeria’s Higher Education – Echono

How Digital Transformation is Revitalizing Nigeria’s Higher Education – Insights from Echono

Arc. Sonny S. T. Echono, the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), has issued a compelling call for Nigerian universities to fully integrate digital technologies or face obsolescence in the global educational landscape.

Speaking at the 15th Convocation Lecture of Osun State University, Osogbo, Echono emphasized that technology is not just an enhancement but the cornerstone upon which the future of higher education must be built.

He asserted, “Adopting digital transformation is imperative; it is the essential lifeline for the advancement of Nigeria’s higher education system and the success of our graduates.”

Describing the current era as one dominated by artificial intelligence, big data analytics, robotics, and seamless information exchange, Echono highlighted that knowledge has become the most valuable asset for nations worldwide.

He stressed that Nigeria cannot afford to lag behind as other countries harness technology to drive education, innovation, and economic development.

“In today’s world, technology defines global competitiveness. To stay relevant, our universities must adopt digital tools that enhance skill development, stimulate innovation, and prepare graduates for a knowledge-based economy,” he explained.

Echono warned that institutions resistant to change risk becoming irrelevant in a job market that demands digital proficiency, where research impact is measured through online platforms, and where countries compete not just on natural resources but on creativity and innovation.

Highlighting successful initiatives across Africa and within Nigeria, he cited Rwanda’s impressive digital education efforts, including its laptop-per-child scheme and collaborations with global partners, presenting Rwanda as a model for Nigeria’s leap into the digital economy.

Within Nigeria, he pointed to the University of Lagos, where Microsoft-supported innovation hubs and membership in the Afretec Network are equipping students with cutting-edge digital competencies aligned with international standards. He urged that such initiatives be expanded nationwide to transform the entire educational ecosystem.

However, Echono acknowledged persistent challenges such as limited internet access, inconsistent power supply, outdated academic programs, and a shortage of digitally skilled lecturers, all of which hinder progress.

“We must confront these realities head-on. Without substantial investment in infrastructure, faculty development, and coherent policies, our digital ambitions will remain unfulfilled,” he cautioned, emphasizing that any digital strategy ignoring these foundational issues is unlikely to succeed.

Despite these obstacles, Echono expressed optimism by highlighting TETFund’s proactive measures. He introduced the Tertiary Education Research and Applications System (TERAS), a platform granting Nigerian scholars access to international research databases, plagiarism detection software, and digital archives. “TERAS enables global academic collaboration, modern learning experiences for students, and increased visibility for Nigerian research worldwide,” he noted.

He also mentioned TETFund’s commitment to establishing smart classrooms, conducting lecturer training programs, and fostering partnerships with innovation centers to translate academic research into practical, industry-ready solutions.

Throughout his address, Echono linked graduate employability directly to digital competence, stressing that Nigerian graduates must be digitally literate to succeed in today’s economy.

“Harnessing technology effectively will empower our graduates not only to secure employment but to become job creators. They will not just participate in the global arena-they will lead it,” he affirmed.

He called on government bodies to maintain robust policy support for digital education, urged universities to update curricula and infrastructure, and encouraged industries to strengthen collaboration with academic institutions.

For students, Echono highlighted the importance of adaptability, continuous learning, and leveraging technology as a problem-solving tool. “Digital transformation bridges the gap between our current challenges and future possibilities. It is the key to cultivating a resilient, innovative, and prosperous Nigeria,” he concluded.
