The Ministry of Housing and Urban Development recently convened a strategic meeting with contractors engaged in its nationwide housing initiatives to expedite project completion and guarantee adherence to contractual deadlines.
Leading the session in Abuja was the permanent secretary, Dr. Shuaib Belgore, alongside the directors overseeing the ministry‘s project divisions.
During his address, Dr. Belgore underscored the ministry’s firm resolve to uphold strict adherence to contract terms and procurement guidelines.
He cautioned that any contractor failing to meet their obligations would face stringent repercussions. These could range from formal inquiries and recovery of advance payments to forfeiture of performance bonds, blacklisting, contract termination, and, if warranted, referral to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
“This meeting serves not only to highlight the critical importance of delivering projects on schedule but also to alert contractors that the Ministry is committed to safeguarding public funds and ensuring optimal value from every investment,” Dr. Belgore emphasized.
He further assured contractors who meet their milestones of timely remuneration following the completion of necessary administrative procedures. Additionally, he revealed plans to conduct site visits to selected projects to directly monitor progress and address any valid issues raised by contractors.
Reaffirming the ministry’s dedication to the Renewed Hope Agenda, Dr. Belgore reiterated the goal of providing Nigerians with quality, affordable, and accessible housing, stressing that meeting project deadlines is an uncompromising priority.
In response, several contractors brought up obstacles such as payment delays, unfavorable weather conditions, and incidents of site vandalism that have impacted their work.
