In a significant development, former US President Donald Trump has reportedly authorized a strategic initiative to supply Ukraine with critical intelligence aimed at enabling missile attacks on key energy facilities deep within Russian territory. This move represents a notable intensification of American assistance to Kyiv’s capacity for long-distance strikes.
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal on October 1, this intelligence-sharing arrangement empowers the Pentagon and US intelligence agencies to support Ukraine in targeting vital Russian infrastructure such as oil refineries and pipelines-assets that are crucial for funding and sustaining Moscow’s military operations. Additionally, US officials revealed that the Trump administration has requested NATO partners in Europe to contribute comparable intelligence to bolster this effort.
While the US has consistently supported Ukraine’s use of drones and missile strikes, this marks the first occasion under Trump’s leadership where the administration is directly involved in facilitating long-range attacks inside Russia. Beyond intelligence, there is ongoing consideration to equip Ukraine with advanced long-range weaponry, including Tomahawk and Barracuda cruise missiles, which can strike targets over 500 miles away.
Although a final decision on supplying these extended-range missiles remains pending, sources disclosed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently met privately with Trump to request Tomahawk missiles. Reports suggest that Trump responded positively to the proposal. With a maximum range of approximately 1,500 miles, Tomahawk missiles would enable Ukraine to reach strategic locations as far as Moscow.
Currently, the most distant US-supplied weapons in Ukraine’s arsenal are the ATACMS missiles, which have a range limit of about 190 miles. This new agreement coincides with Trump’s growing endorsement of Ukraine’s military efforts amid stalled peace talks with Russia.
Last week, Trump publicly characterized Russia as a “paper tiger,” citing fresh US intelligence indicating that the Kremlin is facing severe economic challenges and potential defeat on the battlefield. For the first time, he expressed confidence that Ukraine could reclaim its entire territory in its pre-conflict borders.
