Heightened tension has gripped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, following the refusal of the State Executive Council (SEC) led by Elder Aniekan Akpan to comply with the dissolution order issued by the pdp/” title=”Gov Mbah rules out exit from …”>party’s National Working Committee (NWC).
The PDP’s National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, announced from Abuja that the NWC had officially dissolved the State Executive and appointed a 31-member Caretaker Committee to oversee party affairs for three months until elections are conducted.
Contrary to this directive, the embattled State Chairman, speaking to journalists under heavy security at the party’s secretariat, dismissed the dissolution as baseless misinformation, affirming that the current executive remains cohesive and fully operational.
“The PDP in Akwa Ibom categorically rejects the recent falsehoods circulating on social media, especially on Facebook, which claim that our legitimately elected State Executive Committee has been dissolved,” Akpan declared.
He emphasized that such claims are not only inaccurate but also violate the party’s constitution.
Akpan reiterated that the tenure of the current State Executive is valid until 2028, underscoring that the committee was elected through a properly convened State Congress for a fixed four-year term.
Surrounded by his team, Akpan stressed that the PDP operates strictly under constitutional guidelines and the rule of law, warning that any attempts to destabilize this democratic mandate through fabricated stories or political scheming would be firmly resisted.
“Those spreading these false narratives have already been publicly disowned by some individuals, revealing the desperation and recklessness of these political agitators,” he added.
He further alleged that the NWC had not held any official meeting before purportedly deciding to dissolve the State Executive, citing a statement from the PDP National Secretary that refutes the dissolution claims.
“Reliable sources confirm that no formal session of the NWC took place to authorize such a decision,” Akpan noted.
He referenced a press release from Senator Samuel N. Anyanwu, the PDP National Secretary, which explicitly denies any formal NWC meeting endorsing the dissolution of the Akwa Ibom State Executive.
In conclusion, Akpan urged party members, supporters, and the general public to disregard the unfounded reports and remain loyal to the legitimate leadership of the PDP in the state.
“Our State Executive remains steadfast, committed to promoting the welfare of our party and the people of Akwa Ibom,” he affirmed.
Additionally, the chairman expressed his continued alliance with Governor Umo Eno, highlighting that the governor, though a leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), governs inclusively across party lines.
“Our association with Governor Umo Eno does not constitute anti-party behavior. He is the governor for all citizens, and no one can claim that our collaboration with him undermines our party’s principles,” Akpan concluded.
