A Mexican national residing illegally in the United States, Carlos Nava, 49, who stands accused of multiple sexual assaults involving up to 17 victims, has retracted a previously entered plea agreement. This development has compelled prosecutors to revive numerous charges against him. Nava faces trial in Las Vegas for a series of violent sexual offenses allegedly committed over nearly twenty years. Despite being deported at least eight times since 2002, he repeatedly crossed back into the country unlawfully. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed to 8 News Now that Nava’s history includes prior removals and arrests related to battery and domestic violence, with his most recent deportation occurring in 2020.
On July 30, Nava entered an Alford plea to one felony count of sexual assault involving a deadly weapon, as documented in court records shared by 8 News Now. This type of plea permits a defendant to concede that the prosecution likely has sufficient evidence for conviction without formally admitting guilt. Under this agreement, eight additional charges against Nava were dismissed.
However, on September 25, the day set for his sentencing, Nava withdrew his plea, prompting prosecutors to reinstate the previously dropped charges. According to the Nevada Globe, Clark County Deputy District Attorney Julia Barker informed the court that Nava could be linked to as many as 17 sexual assaults. Of these, six victims have been identified, while 11 remain unknown, including two minors at the time of the alleged offenses. Barker emphasized the strength of the DNA evidence, stating, “It’s difficult for someone to deny involvement when their genetic material is found in locations that strongly suggest guilt.”
Further investigation by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police uncovered 17 pairs of folded underwear stored in a backpack belonging to Nava, which also contained latex gloves and was secured with a rubber band, as Barker detailed. Court documents obtained by Fox News Digital reveal that Nava has faced a series of charges dating back to 2010. Police reports from 2022 indicate ongoing efforts to identify additional victims, with Nava last seen driving a white Ford truck following one such incident.
Currently, Nava remains detained at the Clark County Detention Center. A new trial date is anticipated to be set after his upcoming court appearance scheduled for October 9.
