Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State has officially approved a new salary framework for all health sector employees, aligning their pay with the federal government’s scale. This groundbreaking move is set to enhance motivation and elevate the quality of healthcare services throughout the state.

The announcement was made during the inauguration of the inaugural Gombe Health Summit 2025, hosted at the Gombe International Conference Centre on Thursday.

Among the notable attendees were the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and the Coordinating Minister for Health, Professor Ali Pate, alongside other prominent figures.

Governor Yahaya revealed that starting from October 2025, the state will adopt the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) for all health workers.

This initiative is projected to cost the state government approximately N250 million each month, amounting to an annual expenditure of N3 billion. The governor emphasized that this financial commitment is a vital investment in the wellbeing of healthcare professionals, who are central to the state’s ongoing health sector transformation.

He called on health workers to respond to this gesture with heightened dedication, professionalism, and increased efficiency in their roles.

“I am delighted to confirm the immediate endorsement of the full implementation of CONMESS and CONHESS salary scales for all health personnel, effective October 2025, ensuring their remuneration matches that of their federal counterparts,” Governor Yahaya stated.

“This substantial financial commitment-Two Hundred and Fifty Million Naira monthly, or Three Billion Naira annually-reflects our dedication to supporting our health workforce. In exchange, I urge all health workers in Gombe State to demonstrate renewed commitment, uphold the highest standards of productivity, and focus unwaveringly on improving the health outcomes of our citizens,” he added.

The governor further noted that this alignment with federal pay standards for doctors, nurses, midwives, and other healthcare staff is expected to curb the exodus of skilled professionals, enhance retention rates, and attract qualified personnel to underserved and rural areas.

In addition to salary reforms, Governor Yahaya highlighted broader health sector initiatives underway in the state. These include the refurbishment of 228 primary healthcare facilities, modernization of general hospitals, the launch of the contributory health insurance scheme known as GoHealth, and the introduction of the GoPharma program aimed at providing affordable medications to patients.
