Christy Opara, a former Nigerian international athlete and Olympic medalist, has unveiled an ambitious plan to empower between 200 and 300 young girls through sports and mentorship programs in celebration of the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child.
During a press briefing held yesterday in Abuja, the Nigerian-American track and field star introduced the initiative, which is backed by the Soho24 Foundation. The project is designed to broaden educational access for girls while nurturing vital life skills such as perseverance, teamwork, and discipline-qualities that sports naturally cultivate. The official launch is scheduled for Saturday, 11 October.
Opara expressed profound pride in spearheading this groundbreaking effort aimed at unlocking the potential of girls not only in Nigeria but across the African continent. She emphasized, “This moment transcends a mere announcement; it represents a commitment to action and a promise to uplift the girl child.”
With heartfelt conviction, Ambassador Opara stressed that every girl deserves not only quality education but also the platform to develop her talents and a supportive community to help her achieve her aspirations. “Girls should be empowered to flourish, lead, and illuminate the world around them,” she asserted.
The Olympian outlined the initiative’s mission to advance gender equality by equipping girls with confidence and mentorship, preparing them to compete and succeed on international stages.
To ensure meaningful impact, the program will feature transformative workshops, mentorship opportunities, and skill development activities tailored to inspire and equip participants.
In a symbolic gesture of unity and collaboration, a special exhibition football match will take place between teams representing the Paramilitary and Defence Headquarters, underscoring the collective commitment to this cause.
Reflecting on her personal journey as an Olympian, mother, and youth advocate, Opara shared her belief that true greatness is born from resilience and communal support. “Our goal is to provide every Nigerian girl with the opportunities she rightfully deserves,” she affirmed.
Closing her remarks, Opara made a passionate pledge to cultivate a generation of girls who will shatter barriers and lead with confidence. “Let us stand together and vow that no girl will be left behind,” she declared.
At the event, Dr. Caleb Gidado, former Director of Planning, Research, and Documentation at the National Sports Commission, praised Ambassador Opara’s visionary leadership and dedication to societal development, describing her as an exemplary role model.
“We commend you for launching such a comprehensive program that gives back to the community. Your achievements, including an Olympic medal, are remarkable, but your commitment to nurturing future champions is truly inspiring,” he remarked.
Representing the Nigerian Police Force, DSP Adah Nwakaego lauded Ambassador Opara’s collaboration with the Police Campaign Against Crime and Other Vices (POCACOV) on this empowerment initiative, highlighting the historical marginalization of girls in Nigeria and Africa.
“For too long, the girl child has been overlooked. Your return to make a positive impact on their lives and elevate their societal value is commendable. We deeply appreciate your partnership with POCACOV in this vital endeavor,” she stated.
