The Oyo State House of Assembly has urged Governor Seyi Makinde to honor his commitment to allocate N500 million to Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Ibadan, as promised for the year 2024.
In addition, the legislators requested that the governor initiate regular monthly subvention disbursements starting January 2026 to ensure the university’s smooth academic and administrative functioning.
This appeal emerged from a motion introduced by Hon. Oluwafemi Fowokanmi, the representative for Ibadan South West Constituency 2 and Chairman of the House Committee on Tertiary Education, with Hon. Babajide Adebayo of Ibadan North Constituency 2 seconding the proposal.
During the presentation, Hon. Fowokanmi highlighted the university’s ongoing struggles with insufficient funding, which has affected infrastructure development, staff welfare, and academic programs. He noted that the institution has largely depended on scholarships, internally generated revenue, and TETFUND allocations to stay afloat.
He praised Governor Makinde’s establishment of the university’s Governing Council, recognizing it as a vital move toward securing consistent state funding.
Nevertheless, Hon. Fowokanmi expressed concern that the promised N500 million for 2024 remains unpaid.
He further explained that the university’s financial challenges have intensified following the introduction of the new minimum wage, compelling the institution to take out bank loans to cover staff salaries and other expenses.
Adding to the discussion, Hon. Sunkanmi Babalola, who represents Egbeda State Constituency and chairs the House Committee on Budget and Economic Planning, commended the Makinde administration for enhancing the university’s infrastructure, including improvements to roadways, perimeter fencing, and street lighting.
He emphasized that consistent and timely funding, coupled with monthly subventions, would empower the university to upgrade its facilities, retain skilled staff, and broaden student admission capacity.
Backing the motion, Hon. Babajide Adebayo advocated for a thorough audit of the university’s financial statements to promote transparency and accountability.
In response, the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, approved the motion and directed the House Committee on Tertiary Education to engage with the university’s management team.
He explained that this interaction would enable the Assembly to review the institution’s internally generated revenue, audit outcomes, and other fiscal challenges.
Ogundoyin stressed that insights gained from this process would inform future legislative measures aimed at fostering the university’s development and financial stability.
