Jury selection is underway in the widely followed murder case involving Sarah Hartsfield, a Texas resident accused of fatally injecting her fifth spouse with insulin. The 50-year-old stands charged with the death of Joseph Hartsfield, her husband, who passed away in January 2023. She has entered a plea of not guilty.
According to the grand jury indictment issued in February 2023, prosecutors claim that Sarah deliberately and knowingly caused the death of Joseph Hartsfield by means not fully disclosed to the grand jury. Joseph’s obituary states he died in a hospital from complications related to an ischemic stroke, with his devoted wife present at his bedside. Currently, Sarah Hartsfield is detained at Chambers County Jail in Texas, held on a reduced bail amount of $2 million.
Authorities assert that Hartsfield, a former Army service member, exploited her husband’s diabetic condition to mask the alleged murder. It is claimed she administered lethal doses of insulin and postponed contacting emergency services for several hours, contributing to his death.
Sarah’s marital history is complex. Her first marriage was to her high school boyfriend, Titus Knoernschild. The young couple’s relationship deteriorated quickly. Knoernschild told ABC13 Houston that during their separation, Sarah threatened his life, cautioning him not to be shocked if he did not survive their divorce. They finalized their divorce by 1995, but Knoernschild reported ongoing harassment, including an incident at his Fort Hood workplace in 2008, which led to a no-contact order.
Sarah’s second marriage took place in the mid-1990s. ABC13 reported that in March 1996, she was arrested for allegedly assaulting her husband during a dispute at their Rio Bonito residence; however, the charges were dropped within a week. By the late 1990s, Sarah had entered her third marriage, which ended in divorce in 2018. Around that period, she became engaged to David Bragg in Minnesota. On May 9, 2018, Sarah shot and killed Bragg at his home.
