With the 2025 Hockey Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) set to take place from October 11 to 18 in Egypt, Engineer Simon Nkom, president of the Hockey Federation of Nigeria (HFN), has voiced strong optimism about the readiness of Nigeria’s men’s and women’s hockey teams to achieve top-three finishes and elevate national pride.
Addressing the media in Abuja following a friendly game at the Hockey Pitch, Package B, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Nkom emphasized the Federation’s comprehensive training regimen aimed at fully preparing the athletes for the rigors of this elite continental tournament.
“Physical conditioning is crucial across all sports, whether hockey, handball, or basketball. That’s why we implemented intensive training camps well ahead of the competition to build the players’ stamina and resilience,” he explained.
“This event is far more than a regional contest; it represents the highest level of hockey competition in Africa. We have laid a solid foundation, our athletes are in peak form, and we are confident of securing a medal position,” Nkom affirmed.
Highlighting Nigeria’s upward trajectory in the sport, he pointed out the nation’s rise in the international rankings from 56th to 36th place over recent years.
“There was skepticism about Nigerian hockey not long ago. Now, our women’s squad is ranked third on the continent, while the men’s team stands fourth. These milestones are a testament to our dedication to nurturing talent from the grassroots and continuous development,” he remarked.
To ensure smooth participation and avoid the pitfalls of last-minute arrivals common in international events, Nkom confirmed that both teams would leave Nigeria on October 7. This early departure will allow them to adjust to the environment and engage in several preparatory matches before the tournament begins.
