Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the outgoing head of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has formally transferred the commission’s leadership to Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will assume the role of acting chairman.
The transition occurred on Tuesday during a session with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) held at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.

In announcing the change, Professor Yakubu encouraged all commission staff to fully support and collaborate with the acting chairman.
“Today, I have officially handed over the responsibilities to Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu as Acting Chairman of INEC. I call on all commissioners and directors to offer her the same commitment and cooperation you have extended to me,” he stated.
This leadership handover represents a temporary shift as the commission continues to gear up for forthcoming elections nationwide.
Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu, an experienced lawyer and administrator, has been integral to INEC’s leadership since her appointment as a National Commissioner. She is anticipated to uphold the momentum of the commission’s ongoing reforms and initiatives.
