Teachers from the Ughelli South local government area in Delta State narrowly survived a serious road accident while returning from World Teachers’ Day celebrations.
The incident occurred on Sunday along the Ughelli-Asaba Expressway as the group was heading back to Ughelli.
Reports indicate that the bus carrying the educators collided with a truck near Akiewhe in Isoko North local government, close to Emevor.
Several teachers sustained severe injuries, including fractures to their legs, arms, and heads, and some remain in critical condition at the hospital.
According to eyewitnesses, the truck driver attempted an overtaking maneuver, veering into the bus’s lane just as it approached.
This sudden move caused a violent crash between the two vehicles.
“There were approximately ten teachers on board, with one of them driving the bus. The impact was so intense that emergency responders had to use axes to break open the bus to rescue the trapped victims,” a source revealed.
“Among the injured were five teachers with serious wounds, including the Secretary and Vice Chairman of the NUT Ughelli South LGA chapter. They were immediately transported to Central Hospital Ughelli for urgent medical care,” the source added.
Rose Ezewu, the Commissioner for Secondary Education, promptly visited the hospital to assess the situation firsthand and offer her condolences to the victims.
As news of the accident spreads, family members and colleagues continue to visit the hospital, expressing their support and concern, while the tragedy has deeply unsettled the teaching community in the area.
