A London bus operator claims he was unjustly terminated after being confronted by a crowd of Chelsea supporters while sporting a Liverpool jersey during his shift on a rail replacement service.
Known only as Isaac, the driver was on duty in west London on Saturday evening when his vehicle was encircled by enthusiastic Chelsea fans celebrating their team’s 2-1 win against Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. Video clips circulating online reveal the bus being shaken by the crowd, who noticed Isaac’s white and green Liverpool away kit, chanting and pounding on the windows.
His employer stated that the episode resulted in “major disruption and delays,” which led to his dismissal. However, Isaac maintains he did nothing inappropriate, explaining that the Liverpool shirt was simply “the first clean top” he grabbed before starting work that day.
During an interview on TalkTV, still wearing the same Liverpool shirt, Isaac shared: “I wasn’t aware of the route beforehand. The Liverpool shirt was just the first clean T-shirt I had. It wasn’t until I was near Chelsea that I noticed the fans outside the stadium. Watching the videos later, I found it amusing, but at the moment, sitting in the driver’s seat, it was quite stressful. I had to hold the window shut because it was supposed to lock from the inside, but it didn’t.”
He recounted how police eventually intervened to clear the crowd. “They completely surrounded my bus. The police managed to push them back, and I was able to return to the depot,” Isaac said.
On the following Monday, Isaac received an email from his agency informing him of his termination. “The agency emailed me saying, ‘Regarding the events on Saturday 4 October, we are terminating your contract due to a uniform policy breach.’ The video had gone viral, and the bus company had seen it too,” he explained.
The agency declined to provide further details, citing data protection rules, stating only: “Due to GDPR, we cannot comment on this case. It is being handled internally.”
Isaac, a devoted Liverpool fan, insisted that his supervisors had no objections to his attire before the incident and criticised the management of London’s transport system. “No one raised any concerns about my shirt. I wasn’t told to cover it up; I was just told to keep doing my job. They didn’t really care what I was wearing,” he said. He added, “I don’t see much care from TfL these days. The operation seems poorly managed. Maybe with different leadership, things could improve, but right now, it feels like there’s no common sense in how TfL is run.”
