The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced a temporary halt to the enforcement of the vehicle tinted glass permit, following a judicial injunction that has paused the initiative.
During an interview on AIT, SP Josephine Adeh, the spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, confirmed that the suspension took effect immediately after the police received the official court directive.
She emphasized that the suspension will remain active until the court reaches a final decision on the matter.
SP Adeh stated, “The Force Public Relations Office has informed me that the court order has been duly received, and as a result, the enforcement of the tinted glass permit is currently suspended pending the court’s ruling.
“We respect the judiciary and will patiently await their judgment before proceeding further.”
She further clarified that the tinted glass permit policy was implemented primarily to enhance security, as there have been instances where criminals exploited vehicles with heavily tinted windows to evade detection.
Addressing concerns that the policy was a revenue-generating scheme, the FCT Police spokesperson explained that all fees collected for tinted permits are remitted directly into the Federal Government’s Treasury Single Account (TSA), with no funds going to the police force.
She added, “The legislation was enacted by the authorities, not by the police. Our role is to enforce it. The measure is security-focused, aimed at curbing criminal activities facilitated by the use of darkened vehicle windows, which hinder law enforcement’s ability to identify offenders.”
