Just a day after stepping down from his position, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji has publicly clarified the reasons behind his resignation amid the ongoing controversy surrounding allegations of certificate forgery.
In a statement personally endorsed and shared with Vanguard on Wednesday, Nnaji revealed that his resignation was prompted by a relentless and coordinated campaign of misinformation and politically charged attacks aimed at tarnishing his reputation.
The former minister emphasized that his decision to resign was voluntary and not an admission of any wrongdoing. He made this choice out of respect for the judicial process and to uphold the integrity of the legal proceedings currently underway.
Confident in the outcome of the case he initiated against the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Nnaji expressed optimism that justice would ultimately be served, stating, “Truth will triumph, and history will honor those who stand for justice.”
Excerpts from his resignation letter include:
“This was not an easy decision. Over the past week, I have been subjected to a deliberate and sustained campaign of false accusations and politically motivated attacks targeting my character and office, propagated through various media channels.
“These baseless claims and media misrepresentations have caused significant personal anguish and have begun to divert attention from the critical initiatives of the Ministry and the Renewed Hope Agenda championed by Mr. President.
“Having dedicated over fifty years to building a legacy grounded in diligence, integrity, and service to society, I cannot allow these distractions to undermine the noble goals of this administration.
“My resignation is a personal and principled act-not an admission of guilt-but a commitment to uphold due process and maintain the sanctity of the ongoing judicial proceedings. Ultimately, justice will prevail, and history will vindicate the righteous.
“I remain profoundly thankful to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for entrusting me with this role and for the opportunity to contribute to his vision of a revitalized, innovative, and technologically advanced Nigeria. I pledge my unwavering support to his administration and its transformative mission.”
Chief Nnaji’s statement comes after he had earlier addressed the media through his spokesperson, Dr. Robert Ngwu, on Monday, reaffirming his academic credentials from UNN and accusing a sitting South East governor of orchestrating the smear campaign to boost his own political ambitions.
Despite these assertions, Nnaji unexpectedly tendered his resignation last night, which was subsequently accepted by President Bola Tinubu, as confirmed by an official statement from the Presidency.
